It looks like even the A-list aren’t immune to the allure of cuffing season, with many celebrities deciding to couple up over the winter months to stop themselves feeling so cold and alone. (See: Andrew Garfield and Rita Ora, who got together in November.) Which is all well and good… Or it is, until cuffing season ends, when the days get longer, the sun gets brighter, and you no longer need someone to cuddle up with on the sofa. (See: unconventional pair Andrew Garfield and Rita Ora, who split up in February.)
It was reported by The Sun on Tuesday that the Spiderman actor dumped the popstar as he wanted a more private life – which, to be honest, makes very little sense as he is already a very high-profile actor – with a source telling the newspaper: “Her career is going from strength to strength and lives her life in the spotlight but he told her he wanted to lead a more private life. Rita had tried to do that and had kept their romance off social media but things didn’t work out.” The pair appeared to be the real deal, as they even spent Christmas together - but could he have ditched Rita just because cuffing season has run its course? Maybe? (Andrew has also been spotted being 'very cosy' with actress Aisling Bea, as reported by the MailOnline.)
Cuffing season – where single people suddenly find themselves craving a relationship – usually runs from around October to March. The term started gaining traction around 2013, and while 'cuffing season' is mostly a fabricated social construct, understandably, as humans, we prefer to have partners when it’s freezing outside and we're less willing to socialise after work. But, just like a summer fling, these relationships are prone to ending almost as quickly as they began. And Rita and Andrew aren’t the only case, as even more of our favourite celebrity pairings have decided to cut ties in favour of single life.
It’s thought that Game of Throne’s Emilia Clarke has split from her boyfriend Charlie McDowell, because, in the truly modern evidence of a break-up, he recently unfollowed her on Instagram and also stopped liking her posts, according to Cosmopolitan. (She still follows the film director though.) Emilia confirmed their relationship on Instagram in December, but they’d been linked since October… And given that he stopped liking her posts last month, maybe the relationship just ran it’s wintery course.
According to People, Demi Lovato has also called time on her beau, designer Henry Levy. A source confirmed to the publication that Demi and Henry were no longer an item – after, wait for it, the pair were first linked four months ago, after Demi left a treatment facility following her near fatal overdose in July last year. The source added that, contrary to reports, Henry was never the popstar’s sober companion. Adding to the speculation, the last picture he shared of the pair was in January.
So, that’s cuffing season over for another year, even for celebrities who most likely don’t swipe through Tinder. Look below to see which other star couples have split this year.
