Captain Sir Tom Moore has passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by his family on Twitter. The World War II veteran quickly became a national hero this summer as he raised over £32 million for the NHS amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Even before his 100 laps around his garden in efforts for the NHS, Captain Tom lived an incredible life. He was an officer in the Army, serving in India during the Second World War, and worked as managing director of a concrete company upon his return home. He was also a competitive motorcycle racer, purchasing his first motorbike at only 12-years-old.
At the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, Captain Tom set out to walk 100 laps around his garden with the goal of raising £1000 for NHS Charities Together. In the end, after 24 days of fundraising, Captain Tom was responsible for over 1.5 million donations and raised well over £1000.
His 100th birthday, on 30 April 2020, was marked with hundreds of thousands of cards from around the world — including one from the Queen herself — and flypasts from the RAF and the Army. On 17 July 2020, Captain Tom was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle.
And so, while we mourn the loss of a national treasure, let’s look back the incredible life Captain Sir Tom Moore lived, from his days in the British Army to receiving his Knighthood at the age of 100.
