Can you remember the last time you went out to see live music? No, we can't either. Even though the last 'normal' gigs were last year, it seems like far longer than that. But tonight, the BRITs is going ahead, with the government's Events Research Programme allowing it to take place.
The Brits will be held tonight (as opposed to when it is usually held, in February) at London's O2 Arena, and will be hosted by Jack Whitehall. Over half of the 4,000 tickets will be given to key workers in the city, with performers, nominees, press and sponsors watching the event from their surrounding boxes. As well as providing a negative lateral flow test result, attendees will also be asked to take a test afterwards.
How do I watch the BRITs?
The BRITs are on ITV from 8pm tonight.
Who is performing at the BRITs?
Performers include Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks and Griff, winner of this year's Rising Star award. Headie One, Olivia Rodrigo and Rag'n'Bone Man are also on the schedule, and P!nk will perform with the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Choir. Taylor Swift is winning the Global Icon Award, but is not expected to attend.
'The Brits are always a big night in the music calendar, but this year's awards will be particularly special,' Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said. 'They will reunite live audiences with the best of British talent for the first time in a year, while providing a vital opportunity to see how we can get large crowds back safely as soon as possible.'
The Brits aren't the only big event going ahead, the FA Cup will also be a part of the Covid event trial. Other events include two 3,000 capacity club nights in Liverpool, and a 5,000 capacity gig in the city. Could this be a slow return to live music? We sure hope so.
