The hearts of Beyoncé fans and followers everywhere perhaps skipped a beat when the icon posted a mysterious black square to Instagram on New Year’s Eve. But it was just the singer demonstrating her excellent insta-curation skills as a couple of hours later she posted a video recapping 2019, which has been a brilliant year for her.
The one-and-a half minute video, or “Bey-Cap” as she titled it, is a montage highlighting the events and achievements that have made up this year including birthdays (Ms Tina Knowles’, Blue’s 7th (!) birthday, Michael B Jordan’s, Diana Ross), date nights, album releases and award ceremonies.
The highlight reel also features clips from the BRIT Awards video where Beyoncé and Jay Z accepted their Best International Group award in front a painted portraitof the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, as well as when Bey and Jay met the Duke and Duchess IRL at the London premiere of The Lion King.
In other words, the video is collection of excellence. There are also messages of praise for the performer from former first lady Michelle Obama and Sandra Oh in her TIME 100 speech, as well as several clips from Homecoming, the film Beyoncé created about the build up to and performance of her Coachella set, which won her and her team an Emmy nomination.
Weaved in amongst these professional highlights are family photos and videos - a rarity from Beyoncé and Jay Z, who are famously private. All of which makes the snaps of the kids and the final image is a never-before-seen photo of the entire family spruced up in black and white for the holidays a telling insight into their life off grid. Look out especially, for Sir sitting on Jay’s lap and Rumi on Bey’s with Blue Ivy holding court in the middle. It might mean you have to watch the video several times to spot every image - but, believe us, it's worth it.
