Yesterday was National Best Friends Day – a day to celebrate all the things you love about your best mate. And when you think of best mates in Hollywood, how can you not think of BFFs Matt Damon and Ben Affleck?

They met at school in Massachusetts and have been firm friends ever since. They even hit Tinseltown together, and went on to win a dual Oscar for their screenplay of Good Will Hunting – the hit 1997 film in which they both starred alongside Robin Williams.

It would seem natural, therefore, that one or other of the pair would mark NBF Day in some way, and what better way to do it than via Instagram...

Taking to the photo-sharing app, it was Ben who made the move, posting a collage of his best mate Matt. In it, Matt is being presented with a birthday cake, which Ben duly sticks his fingers into. Presumably as payback, Matt then plunges Ben's entire face straight down into the cake. The results are really quite funny – truly it's a winning narrative...

Captioning the collage 'This guy', Ben also tagged it #NationalBestFriendsDay. We mean, YOU GUYS!

They both look quite a bit younger in the pics, demonstrating just how long the pair have been friends. As if we needed reminding... earlier this week they were awarded the 'Guys of the Decade' gong at Spike Guys Choice Award.

Are they our favourite A-lister pals? Quite possibly.

Other stars to mark the day include reality TV star Nicole Richie, who posted this amusing snap, captioning it: 'Happy #NationalBestFriendsDay... I'm currently looking for new ones'

And SATCs Kristen Davis, who posted this to Twitter:

Incidentally, SATC celebrates its 18th anniversary this week and how appropriate is that, that National Best Friends Day should fall on the anniversary week of a show that's all about celebrating friendship?

Highly appropriate we say!
