It feels awfully late for awards season, but the BAFTA nominations for 2021 have finally been announced. Thankfully, following criticism last year about the lack of diversity in the nominations (not one actor of colour was nominated in 2020), the acting categories are far more diverse, with Bukky Bakray, Daniel Kaluuya and Riz Ahmed being just some of the names nominated.
There have also been a host of female directors nominated, with Shannon Murphy, Chloé Zhao, Jasmila Žbanić and Sarah Gavron on the list. Nomadland and Rocks lead the field with seven nominations each, closely followed by The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman with six nominations.
Naturally, there are still controversies. Many are angry that Carey Mulligan and Viola Davis have been left off the Best Actress shortlist, for example. But no one can deny that it's a strong list, and a marked difference from previous years where the ceremony seemed to echo the US award lists.
The rest of the nominations are below - the winners will be announced on April 11.
