News has broken today that Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have called off their engagement. After meeting on the set of Saturday Night Live in 2014, Davidson and Grande had a whirlwind romance which was well-documented on social media.
The pair announced their engagement in June and seemed to be completely in love, with Grande including an ode to him on her most recent album.
However, some of the comments Davidson has made about Grande have had people questioning just how wonderful their relationship really is.
Back in September Davidson appeared on Saturday Night Live with colleague Colin Jost and spoke about his relationship with Ariana. The conversation strayed onto the topic of prenups, and Davidson joked that while Grande pays $60,000 for rent, he just stocks the fridge. Leading Jost to say that a man ‘doesn't always have to be the breadwinner in a relationship,’ to which Davidson replied, ‘Right, he does not—last night I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs. I believe in us, and all,’ he continued, ‘I just want to make sure she can't go anywhere.’
Understandably, Davidson received major backlash for his comment, and it’s been hard for some people to forget about that insensitive joke since it happened.
Later in the show he joked that if they did break up, he’d be stuck working in US supermarket K-Mart listening to Grande’s song ‘Pete Davidson’ on the speakers.
Of course, it’s absolutely none of the public’s business who Ariana Grande dates - no matter how public her relationships are, but comments like the above from Davidson are such a red flag that not everyone will be upset the couple have gone their separate ways.
