It's a problem many stars have experienced – posting a (what they think is) witty post to Instagram, only for it to be torn to shreds by angry fans they've unwittingly offended – like Blake Lively recently at Cannes...

But very few deal with it as rapidly and as effectively as The Devil Wears Prada star, Anne Hathaway. Earlier yesterday, the 33-year-old actress/new mum posted a meme to Instagram of Helena Bonham Carter, her co-star in new film Alice Through The Looking Glass. The meme read: 'In a world of Kardashians... be a Helena Bonham Carter'.

Fans did not take to the snap however, and following a stormy blacklash from followers, Anne swiftly deleted it, before popping this one up instead:

Captioned: 'It never occurred to me I was pitting anyone against each other. Not my style. Peace x', subsequent comments written below, praised the actress for her quick and apologetic response.

One fan – @brazilianseawitch – wrote: 'IN A WORLD FULL OF CLASSLESS PEOPLE, BE A @annehathaway πŸΈβ˜•οΈ', whilst another – @leannagage – said: 'Your class is amazing 😍 we should all try to be like you in my opiniom' [sic].

She might be acting as a queen in her new Alice in Wonderland film, but when it comes to diffusing a social media storm IRL, it seems Anne Hathaway is queen of that too.

Hollywood, take note.
