Hugh Grant took no prisoners as he defended his wife Anna Eberstein against ‘misogynistic’ internet trolls criticising her appearance. In a post shared on X, the 64-year-old actor shared that he had had enough of publications posting pictures of his Swedish wife, Anna, 41, only for her to be criticised in the comments section.

‘Sometimes when I go to events my wife comes with me,’ Hugh’s post began. ‘If the @MailOnline get hold of pictures they put it on their website and hundreds of comments tear my wife to pieces.  She’s never thrust herself forward or courted attention in any way. I don’t know if the comments are real or written by the Mail. Or by bots. But I do know it’s cyber bullying. And misogynist. And I think it may be in some way the business model of the @MailOnline. Monetising unkindness.’ While he did not mention any articles by name, Anna had been referred to as his ‘leggy wife’ in an article the day before.

Hugh, who is a strong supporter of tougher press regulation after finding himself at the centre of multiple phone hacking scandals, was supported online by his followers. ‘Thanks for highlighting the unfair nature of this business,’ one supporter wrote. ‘You and your wife are more than entitled to enjoy events and she certainly does not deserve any negativity for just being present. You have been an effective voice, a brave person and it's great to see someone calling out unkindness. We should all think more before we make comments.’

I’m just lucky. I’m lucky. I’ve got a great wife. I love her.’

That’s quite the pivot, given Hugh’s comments on marriage just two years previously. In a 2016 interview with Howard Stern, he said, ‘Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful relationships?
