Bad news, darlings: it looks like the party is finally over for perennial fashion victims Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, as Absolutely Fabulous creator and star Jennifer Saunders has announced she is retiring the iconic characters for good.
'I'm not doing anything more with Ab Fab - that's it,' the comedian and writer told the Mail on Sunday, emphasising 'That. Is. It. I can't see the point of doing anything else with it, really.'
The show first aired on BBC Two back in 1992, starring Jennifer as hapless fashion PR Eddy and Joanna Lumley as her on-screen partner-in-crime Patsy, the perma-beehived, perma-drunk fashion director.
Saunders cited the sheer amount of time it takes to pull together an Ab Fab project as one of her reasons, revealing 'it just takes so long,' and added that she would prefer to spend the time with her grandchildren and devote herself to other projects.
'There's lots of other stuff I'd like to do. Plus, I'd like to spend time with my grandchildren.' she told the Mail's Event magazine. 'So, if I did Ab Fab as well, that woud just stop me doing anything new, or thinking of any other ideas or having a different job or whatever.'
'If someone suggested Ab Fab: The Musical we'd be so old,' she added. 'This is like taking geriatrics out now. The film was for the fans.'
As much as we'll miss our favourite vodka-swigging duo, over the course of six seasons, one feature film, nearly 25 years and countless Lacroix outfits, they've certainly had a good innings. And with every episode ready to binge on Netflix, Patsy and Eddy will still be there in our time of need (read: on a Sunday morning when all we need is to see someone more hungover than we are...) Time to break out a commiseratory Bolly? Be rude not to, darling...
