What is a double helix piercing?
Unsurprisingly, the clue is in the name when it comes to the double helix piercing. It’s super similar to a helix piercing, only doubled. Essentially, two piercings that sit on the cartilage of your ear.
Does a double helix piercing hurt?
In general, ear piercings don’t rank too highly on the pain scale – although pain is, of course, subjective. It’s also worth noting that fleshier areas like the lobe are less painful than harder skin like the cartilage. Piercings that are notoriously more painful include nipple piercings, tongue piercings, septum piercings and dermal piercings. Expect a bit of a sting for each of these!
How long does a double helix piercing take to heal?
Usually, cartilage piercings take around six months (or sometimes longer) to heal. It’s always a good idea to avoid changing your starter stud to a hoop too quickly. Heavier jewellery can cause the piercing to migrate - a big no no.
How much does a double helix piercing cost?
Prices will vary depending on where in the UK you're based but, on average, you can expect to pay anything from £35 upwards.
How can I stop my double helix piercing becoming infected?
It may be tempting, but you should absolutely avoid playing with your piercings - especially when there's the potential your hands could be dirty. It's always recommended that you keep your piercing clean by gently wiping it with a saline solution twice a day until it's fully healed. The Studex Advanced Piercing Aftercare Solution, £8 is a great option.
A good indicator that your piecing is healed is when it's not crusty, red or irritated. If it's painful, and you think it could be infected, contact your piercer for advice.
