We have to admit it – nothing looks so cool as an expertly curated ear stack. One piercing proving to be particularly popular at the moment is the cartilage piercing. Whether it’s a dainty daith hoop, a diamond helix stud or a glint of gold jewellery on the tragus, we just can’t get enough of a good ear party.

Scroll on for the full lowdown.

What is a cartilage piercing?

Put simply, a cartilage piercing is effectively any type of ear piercing that isn't on the actual earlobe. This includes your tragus, conch, daith and helix.

Does a cartilage piercing hurt?

Wondering whether or not a cartilage piercing is painful? Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a tricky one to answer - pain levels are so subjective. However, where there’s a needle involved, there’s always going to be some level of pain, and in general, the fleshier the area (like the lobe) the less the pain level. Harder skin (like the cartilage) may be a little higher up on the pain scale.

How long does it take a cartilage piercing to heal?

Healing times are different for different people – but a rough estimate is that a cartilage piercing usually heals in and around 6 months to a year. A top tip? Avoid changing a stud to a hoop too quickly – the weight can pull on your piercing, causing it to migrate or to become irritated and ultimately infected. Be patient.

How much does a cartilage piercing cost?

Depending on where you go in the UK, prices for a cartilage piercing will vary.  A good indicator? Anything upwards of £20 is fairly normal. Always seek out a qualified piercer - you'll achieve the best results and minimise the risk of infection.

How can I clean my cartilage piercing?

Infection is a very real risk when it comes to piercings. Following the advice of your pierecer is always advised, but generally, you should look to clean the whole area twice a day using a clean cotton bud and a sterile saline solution. And in the event that you suspect you’re dealing with an infection, schedule in a call with your piercer asap - they can advise you on how best to proceed and ensure that your piercing gets back to it’s best.

Diamonds, pearls and gold combine for an eye-catching look.

One thing worth noting though, is that anything beyond a basic ear piecing should require more than just a little consideration. From nose piercingsnipple piercings  and industrial piercings, any type of body modification should be carefully thought out and planned for before you take the plunge. That means no at home piercings - you’ve been warned.
