Zara McDermott's hair is the envy of many, so you can imagine my delight when the Love Island star turned Made In Chelsea star turned singing sensation agreed to talk through me through all the secrets behind it. After Zara left the Love Island villa fans became used to seeing her hair tumbling over her shoulders in a waterfall of glossy curls and it very quickly became her go-to look, but it required a lot of maintenance. Zara explains 'I only used to feel confident wearing my hair curly. I used to wear really long hair extensions too so it was a mammoth task to curl it all.' (Find out all about Zara McDermott's favourite make-up products here).
I only used to feel confident wearing my hair curly
More recently, Zara has dialled down her hair extension appointment times, 'recently I've had my long tape extension removed and have opted for a very small amount of GoldFever's Keratin Bonds to help my hair recover and repair itself from any damage. I've cut down the length of them too, so my hair is its natural length now.'
Zara's McDermott's High Street Hair Hero
As Zara knows, with frequent heated hair styling comes a bit of damage, but she's hit upon a purse-friendly solution. 'I discovered the original John Frieda Frizz Ease Serum, £6.99, and I use it every day to combat my fly-aways. I over-styled my hair when I came out of Love Island and curled it pretty much every day for a year. I’ve got so much damage and breakage but this does a great job at helping tame the damaged lengths.'
How Zara Likes To Wear Her Hair On Camera
Avid Made In Chelsea viewers will know that, though Zara feels most comfortable with her her curled, she has dabbled with wearing it straight recently, too. 'I have started wearing my hair straight more - it’s naturally straight - as it's less time consuming. That said, my hair is coloured with the balayage technique, so even though wearing it straight is kinder to it, I do think that curling it complements the colour more. On camera the blonde in my hair looks great when it's curled I think. Hair is a huge passion of mine so I love experimenting with different produts and curling styles'.
The Haircare Routine
Zara McDermott has fine-tuned a haircare routine that is devoted to nourishing and protecting her lengths. Here's how it's done: 'I use oil on my hair every single day and I have done for about 6 years. I put it on when it’s wet. I also use a serum and then before I blow-dry it I spritz on lots of heat protection, paying particular attention to the front parts.'

'I always use a heat protection spray that has argan oil or keratin in. My mum always told me to look after my hair and use heat protection. For a long time I didn’t listen to her and now I wish I had because I do have some damage. I also try to use a hair mask once a week.'
Zara's Top Hair Tip
Zara has a keen eye for hair hacks, and has one up her sleeves specifically for those who are keen to give another hair colour a go without having to commit to a permanent revamp. 'If you've ever wanted to try a different hair colour extensions are great alternative if you don’t want to put any permanent colour on your hair. You can add natural highlights, lowlights or baby-lights and even the illusion of a balayage colour job. I’ve always worn BeautyWorks tapes or GoldFever bonds. I recommend them both.'
