When it comes to top-tier hair styling products, Colour Wow's cult Dream Coat Supernatural Spraydeserves an honorary mention. In fact, you can’t talk about the best without it - at least in my (slightly biased) opinion. I’m not even sure how I used to straighten my hair without it - natural or with extensions. It works wonders on unwanted frizz. So much so that when I straighten my afro hair and it rains, I don’t panic. Providing I have applied my trusty Dream Coat in advance, my hair remains straight, soft and shiny. It’s so effective that it takes around three washes for my hair to fully return to its natural curl pattern. For a long time I was adamant that no product could rival it, even though at £27 a bottle, the cost does add up when you're using it as frequently as I do. And when that happens, you have two options: go without, or look for alternatives. How do you find new favourites? You try new things.
When TRESemmé's Lamella Shine Ultra-Gloss Spray landed on the beauty desk, I was sceptical, but gave it a go nevertheless. Here's my verdict...
What does TRESemmé Lamellar Shine Ultra-Gloss Spray do?
-
Delivers instant gloss using lamellar technology that targets damaged areas of hair.
-
Works best with heat, so blow-drying or straightening is ideal.
-
Lightweight feel doesn’t leave hair stiff or greasy.
-
Tames flyaways and smooths strands for a sleeker finish.

I’ll admit it: I was shocked. On my wig, my hair was so smooth after I had straightened it, the finish that makes people assume you’ve just left a salon. Celebrity hairstylist Willis Galbraith used it on Sophie Habboo at the BAFTAs last week, which speaks volumes about its instant shine power for red carpet moments. And yes, it even offered that frizz-resistance.
There are some key differences, though. Unlike Color Wow's Dream Coat, which keeps my hair sleek for days (even through rain), the TRESemmé gloss didn’t have quite the same staying power. After a day or two, the effect started to fade, and I needed to reapply. I also noticed that if you overspray, it can make your hair feel a bit stringy or weighed down, so a light hand is crucial. I have yet to try it on my natural afro hair, but on my wig, the results were impressive enough to tempt me to experiment further.
Verdict:
Final thoughts? If Dream Coat is your ride-or-die but the price makes you wince, TRESemmé’s Lamellar Shine Spray is 100% worth a shot. It’s not quite supernatural, but it’s pretty magical for a fiver now that it's on sale at boots.

**What the brand says: ‘**Dream Coat uses a ground-breaking, heat-activated polymer technology that is feather-light. It will not weigh hair down or leave it greasy. When activated by the heat of your blow dryer along with light tension from a brush, Dream Coat forms an invisible, hydrophobic matrix that does two things: Compresses each strand into a sleek, silky, supple shape and two, sheathes every strand in a light, imperceptible “raincoat” that repels moisture.’What we know: The Color Wow Dream Coat works like magic by creating a protective shield around each hair strand, keeping frizz at bay, even in the most humid weather. It uses ingredients like keratin to strengthen and add shine, without any heavy sulphates or silicones that can weigh your hair down. Once activated with heat, it leaves your hair smooth, shiny, and frizz-free for days.
**Renee Washington digital beauty and fashion writer says: ‘**Color Wow is still the gold standard for me nothing keeps my hair this sleek, even in the rain. It’s pricey, but the results last for days and it never lets me down.’
