Last year saw the revival of mullets, the advent of soft wolf cuts and most recently, the dawn of the butterfly cut, a trend that's still going strong if our TikTok feeds are anything to go by. The hashtag #butterflycut currently has over 184 million views on the app and counting, thanks to a two-step hack that TikTokers are experimenting with to achieve the layered look themselves at home. It's a bold move. Yes, many of us embraced the art of an at-home trim during the pandemic, but an all-out layered look? We'd advise you leave that in the hands of the pros.

That said - and again we're categorically not advising that you try this at home - some of the results, whether by fluke or skill, are actually quite impressive.

It all started with hair extrodinaire, New York stylist Brad Mondowho took to TikTok (and Instagram) to share his seemingly simple shortcutto creating the butterfly cut at home. It's a video that has inspired TikTok users the world over.

In his TikTok, which now boasts 1.9 million likes, Brad parts the hair across the mid section of the head, horizontally (i.e. from ear to ear). He then creates two ponytails, one at the front section of the head 'like a unicorn', the other is made from the remaining hair at the back of the head, it should be a 'really highAriana Grande style pony'.

As for the cut, Brad goes big, chopping around four to six inches off both ponytails. He then undoes each pony, assess the face framing strands and connects the sides by cutting into the hair further.

What you should be left with is a sassy new-gen take on the iconic "The Rachel" cut, think: texture, oomph and a heck load of bounce. The likelihood that you'll end up with anything like Matilda Djerf's, coveted do, which some consider the epitome of the butterfly cut, however, is low. Want a butterfly cut? Take her feed to your go-to hairdresser the next time you book in. It's not a DIY-friendly cut.
