If you're frantically looking for a comprehensive guide on how to cut your kids' hair at home you've come to the right place. With the news that hair salons in England aren't allowed to open their doors again until 12th April 2021 households across England are considering the possibility of DIY haircuts at home. Ask any pro worth their salt and they'll advise you to hold off. Hold on that extra few months until you can put your children in the salon chair and sit back as they get the trim of all trims from a professional. That said, if you're horrified by the possibility of sending your child back to school with hair that hasn't seen a pair of scissors since before Christmas you may see no alternative to hand than a do-it-yourself haircut at home. If you've made your mind up and that's the route you're going down heed our advice to the letter. First of all, get yourself a decent pair of haircutting scissors. Regular kitchen scissors don't afford enough precision and nail scissors? No way. Shop the best of the best below:

Next find the right hair tutorial for you. Following a video or illustrated guide is important as you need an easy way to reference what you are doing. Following a written guide leaves space for misinterpretation and error, two things you don't want when it comes to cutting your child's hair! Here are some of the best tutorials we've found so far:

Tip #1 - Distractions Are Key

The less your child moves about the easier it is for you to cut their hair with precision. Set up shop in front of a TV or put their favourite TV show in front of them on an iPad. The less they move the better their haircut will be!

Tip #2 - Less Is More

Caution is key when it comes to at-home haircuts and less is most definitely more. Start by taking off the absolute minimum, whether it's with scissors or clippers. Always go in with a grade higher than you want to use on the clippers, and cut less off than your first instinct tells you to when cutting hair with scissors.

Tip #3 - Use Their Last Haircut As A Guide

If your child has short hair the likelihood is you'll be able to pick up on lines and layers that their hairdresser styled in during their last cut. These are a gift and the perfect line to follow. Section your child's hair so that these lines and shapes are more visible and follow those lines and shapes as much as possible. That way, hopefully, you'll simply end up with a shorter version of the haircut your child had originally, not an all-out revamp.

Tip #4 - Don't Simply Cut Across A Section Of Hair

Do this and you'll end up with a very blunt cut and a finish that is too choppy. Watch the videos above and you'll see the host cuts into sections of hair affording a softer finish.
