If there’s one positive to take away from lockdown, it’s that the enforced low maintenance lifestyle has encouraged so many of us to get on board with a healthy haircare routine. Of course, it goes without saying that we desperately yearn to have our hair back in the hands of the professionals for a colour, cut and style. BUT the break away from heat styling and dye (especially for those of us who regularly have our strands bleached) can only mean good things for the health of our hair.
As with skincare, sales of haircare soared in 2020 with brands like Olaplex taking a best-selling spot over on Cult Beauty, [Space NK](http://These Are The 10 Best-Selling Beauty Products On Space NK In 2020) and John Lewis. Both Look Fantastic and John Lewis are predicting ‘hair health’ and ‘hair wellness’ to continue to garner interest in 2021 and already Look Fantastic has seen a 62% rise in searches week on week for haircare. Specifically, consumers are looking for nourishing treatments as John Lewis reports in its Beauty Bets 2021 Report, ‘As one of our customers’ biggest haircare concerns, we are seeing demand for products that thicken and replenish the hair, restoring its natural bounce and glow.’
One A-lister who’s noticed huge improvements in the health of her hair over the past year is Hailey Bieber. Posting on her Instagram stories just recently, the model shared a selfie with the caption: ‘Trying to get my hair healthy again and to actually grow after years of highlights and damage from heat and styling and extensions has been a JOURNEY…finally feels healthier than ever and is actually growing faster than it ever has.’ Her secret? ‘Gonna share some of the things I’ve being doing for the past 8-10 months to get my hair happy again.’ While we’re yet to see her top tips and tricks, we shall be keeping a close eye on her Instagram feed to update this feature regularly - so watch this space.
In the meantime, Zoe Irwin, celebrity hair stylist and ghd ambassador has shared her ultimate healthy hair commandments so you can get a head start…
How To Maintain Healthy Hair
**1. Freeze Dry Your Blow Dry: '**Turn down the heat on your hairdryer and improve the condition of your hair. With a powerful hairdryer, like the ghd helios hairdryer, £159, the air flow means that you don’t need to rely on heat for drying your hair, the power itself is enough. Always flash cool each section of your hair and dry with a round bristle brush to add moisture and shine.’
2. Massage Your Scalp: 'Massaging your scalp daily for 10 minutes has an incredible effect on the hair. It will relieve tension and increase the blood flow for thicker, healthier, longer hair. And it's so easy to do!'
3. Treatment Layering: 'Super charge your hair by layering hair treatments, this technique is equivalent to a facial but for hair. The secret is to start with a protein mask which helps to bind broken fibres together and strengthen fragile, damaged hair. Then follow with a conditioning mask and finish with a colour mask to retain and enhance colour and shine.'
4. Bigger Is Better: 'Swap small brushes for big paddle brushes. The wide surface means that more hair is being brushed at once, so less brushing is needed overall and thus less stress is put on the hair.'
5. Cold Rinse: 'By rinsing or washing your hair with cold water, you close and seal the hair cuticles which helps add extra shine and combat frizz. So always turn your shower to cold for a quick cold rinse before getting out.'
6. Gently Does It: 'When hair is wet it is fragile and vulnerable to breakage so brush wet hair VERY gently. Use a wide tooth comb like the ghd detangling comb, £8.50. The wide tooth design allows for delicate detangling on damp hair which is fragile and more prone to damage.'
