Here at Grazia HQ, we have a long-lasting affinity with the ‘90s. An era defined by the Spice Girls, high-waisted denim and the Nokia 6110 that instantly made you cool– the ‘90s kick-started many a trend, including several iconic hairstyles. As with fashion, beauty loves to repeat itself – and the trends born out of the ‘90s are repeated time and time again. Banana clips, scrunchies, headbands, waterfall ponytails, braids (to name a few) are all seeing a runway comeback that’s providing plenty of inspiration for our hairstyles today.
As well as the Spring/Summer 20 runway, the hotly anticipated television adaptation of Celeste Ng’s novel Little Fires Everywhere has reignited our obsession and nostalgia for the era. Set in the '90s, Elena Richardson (played by Reese Witherspoon) dons a pristine, sleek lob that ever so slightly flicks in at the ends to give it that '90s edge. Elena’s daughter, Izzy (played by Megan Stott) opts for an angular (longer at the front), more rebellious bob that’s often paired with a classic choker. Elsewhere in the series, Mia Warren (played by Kerry Washington) sports a natural bob inspired by the Salt-N-Pepa half-bob. Her daughter, Pearl (played by Lexi Underwood) is often seen with her hair in braids accompanied with a headband and some killer hoop earrings.
If you’re as nostalgic as we are, take a trip down memory lane with our round-up of the best ‘90s hairstyles that you can totally recreate now - just look to these A-listers for inspiration…
90s Hair Styles
Big Curls: Then
Julia Roberts made a convincing case for big, fluffy curls in Pretty Woman (1990) that we're still obsessing over now.
Big Curls: Now
Make it messy and tousled a la Ariana Grande for a modern update on the big curly hair 'do.
Broken Fringe: Then
No one wore the broken, bitty fringe better than Britney Spears.
Broken Fringe: Now
Pair it with an up-do and a serious smouldering eye for that cool-girl edge.
'Croydon Facelift': Then
Even Kate Moss with her killer cheekbones donned the 'Croydon Facelift' - aka a tightly pulled back hair do that lifts the face.
'Croydon Facelift': Now
Throw it back to the '90s some more and take inspiration from Gigi Hadid's slicked back 'do and killer hoop earring combo.
Flower Clips: Then
Drew Barrymore had many a '90s trend checked with this look, but kudos for the daisy hair clips - proof bigger was always better.
Flower Clips: Now
Dial it down for every day wear with two smaller clips as seen on Emma Roberts.
Oversized Clips: Then
An oversized clip can complete a chin-grazing bob, just look to Cameron Diaz for reference.
Oversized Clips: Now
A little less stylised, Alexa's beachy waves and emerald slides are the perfect summer update on this '90s trend.
Pink Hair: Then
The 90s belonged to Gwen Stefani - no one made pink hair look as cool as the No Doubt frontwoman.
Pink Hair: Now
Pixie Geldof can make any hair style look cool, but we're especially into this soft, pastel pink colour - that's not quite as blinding as Stefani's.
Plaits: Then
Low maintenance and so easy to do, we love these simple plaits for second day hair.
Plaits: Now
Not much has changed to this failsafe style. Keep the hair simple and add a sunhat or statement earrings (or both) to dial it up.
'The Rachel': Then
The concept for 90s highlights was the more visible the better - ideally in a shade completely contrasting to that which nature gave you.
'The Rachel': Now
Both Kylie Jenner and Beyonce have recently opted for lighter streaks just in that front section of the hair, around the face, for that halo effect.
