To mark World Emoji Day the clever folks at Twitter have worked out the most used emojis around the globe. And their findings reveal a lot about the world we’re living in.

Coming in top for the UK is, drum roll please… the despairing crying face. Considering certain recent events, we’re hardly surprised. The same goes for Canada and US - depressing stuff.

India, Mexico and South Africa are clearly much more positive, with their emoji of choice being the high five, whereas in France, Italy and Japan they're pretty loved up - their most used emoji is heart based. Over in South America it’s all about the music, with the most used emoji in Colombia, Brazil and Argentina being the musical note.

Other interesting things to note include the fact that people tweet more beer emojis than coffee emojis, which says a lot, and that there are more full heart emojis used than broken heart emojis - hallelujah!

When it comes to food, overall the most used emoji is the pizza. We could have predicted that... In second place came the cake (excellent choice), followed by the strawberry (definitely an underused emoji on our part!).
