Taking the prize for today’s most eye rolling news, is a report that confirms the nicer you are at work, the less you will earn.
New research, published in The European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, found that the ‘nicer’ a woman is at work, the lower her salary is likely to be.
The scientists, who surveyed 375 women and men at a Dutch electrical company, discovered that women who were classified as dominant or assertive were better compensated financially than their more accommodating peers.
Moreover, the ‘nice’ women surveyed had no idea they were being unfairly rewarded. ‘We found that women aren't aware that more agreeable women are being punished for being nice. The nice women we polled in our study even believed they were earning more than they deserved,’ Dr Biron commented.
The pattern is mirrored when you compare men, but when you contrast the salaries of dominant men with that of their female colleagues of a similar composition it makes for pretty depressing reading. Much like the pay gap stats suggest, in this study they found that regardless of attitude in the workplace, men earn a significant amount more than women.
