It was only recently revealed that David Hockney’s retrospective was the most visited exhibition Tate Britain has ever hosted. Within the space of a mere four months, the show was seen (and secretly Instagrammed) by more than 478,082 people.
Though the news was hardly surprising, as the capital is renowned for its culture.
And today, The Guardian has reported that London has officially been named the museum capital of the world.
A report by Themed Entertainment Association, listed the 20 most visited museums across the globe during 2016 and four of London’s cultural attractions made the final cut.
The British Museum landed a top spot at number six after 6,420,000 people visited last year, while the National Gallery placed at number eight, with 6,263,000 visitors recorded in total.
The Tate Modern took the tenth spot after welcoming 5,839,000 visitors, while the Natural History Museum landed thirteenth place with 4,624,000 visits reported.
But which country secured the top spot? The Museum of China in Bejing attracted 7,550,000 visitors last year, making it the most visited museum in the world.
Washington DC’S National Air and Space Museum came second, shortly followed by the Louvre in Paris.
