Excitement is at an all-time high as hundreds of thousands of women across the world prepare to join their local Women’s Marches tomorrow. If you haven’t heard about the Women’s Marches yet – where have you been?! Sparked by the organisation of the March On Washington for tomorrow, Saturday 21st January (the first day of Donald Trump’s presidency), hundreds of marches have sprung up in almost every major city, including London. Everyone from Alexa Chung to Zendaya have been sharing the feminist love on social media, too, with these icons being expected to attend the London and Washington marches respectively.
Women and men have been sharing the placards they plan to carry for tomorrow’s event all over social media, with the hashtag #WhyIMarch. Not only do these posters highlight the historical importance of tomorrow’s event, but they bear in mind the key aims of the March’s organisers tomorrow, highlighting a variety of issues. Not just gender issues, but as the posters below show, issues of sexuality, race and immigration have been emphasised by the various placards. There’s even websites dedicated to selling merchandise for the March on Washington.
The works of art range from Cyndi Lauper song puns to quotes from famous women’s rights activists of history, and from references to Trump’s “pussy grabbing” remarks, to one of the most famous taglines of the movement – “women’s rights are human rights.” Many have even shared their own stories of sexual violence and harassment as a way to lend their support to the movement. Tomorrow’s event is sure to be an emotional showcase of solidarity unlike any other – and will almost certainly go down in the history books.
