A campaign has been launched to encourage women to feel more comfortable breastfeeding in public, following a poll that found six out of 10 new mums tried to hide their breastfeeding and 34% feel embarrassed breastfeeding in public.

The poll, by Start4Life, also found that one in five mothers believed that people did not want them to breastfeed in public. Although it found that 72% support public breastfeeding, 57% find it acceptable in restaurants.

A number of stars including Gisele Bundchen, Jamie King, Miranda Kerr and Gwen Stefani have shared pictures of them breastfeeding on Instagram to raise awareness. Jaime King said of the picture she posted of her breastfeeding: 'It was 4 am, and I was breastfeeding my son, when the woman who was helping me take care of him took the picture. Everything you could possibly feel, I was feeling during that sacred, challenging, beautiful, scary time.'

She added: 'I had been hearing so much BS about breastfeeding (being) the only way and that if women use formula there must be something wrong with them. And it made me think about this thing within mommy-hood where there’s all this women against women stuff going on, so I posted it because I believe every woman has a right and a choice to do what she wants to do.'
