Picture the scene: 12 hunky models and Instagram influencers wearing Katie Holmes-style cashmere bra and cardigan ensembles and furry UGG boots run through the snow and into a wood cabin nestled in the mountains. They are greeted by a cosy log fire, mugs of steaming hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and chunky knit personalised blankets laid out for each of them.
This isn’t the opening scene for yet another Christmas-themed Netflix rom-com, but our dream forwinter Love Island.
Caroline Flack has today said that the next season of Love Island – which will be filmed in South Africa, where temperatures in January range form 18–21 degrees Celsius – will be the ‘hottest yet’. But we can't help but wish it was actually a little, well, colder.
Our logic is as follows; winter is infinitely sexier than summer. Sure, people tend to wear fewer items of clothing in summer, so you see more of their bodies, but the snuggling opportunities are much more frequent, and let’s face it comfortable, in winter.
Instead of chit-chatting on the day beds, islanders would huddle around a bonfire, the outdoor pool (which they don't swim in anyway) would be an ice rink, and dates outside the villa would change from surfing and wine tasting to sledging and… mulled wine tasting. An added bonus is that the firepit in the current Love Island villa would actually be a source of warmth and light, rather than an eyesore.
Love Island is, of course, fertile ground for commercial partnerships, but instead of the neon green bikinis and sexy blazers of the summer, we’d all be buying oversized shearling coats, soft cashmere jumpers and those sexy long johns you wear under trousers.
