If you're a Stranger Things obsessive wiling away the time while you wait for the next series to air on Netflix then you're in for a treat because we know that Natalia Dyer has been cast in a new series titled Velvet Buzzsaw.
Ok so it won't be exactly the wonderfully gooey Sci-Fi treat that Stranger Things was. And actually, Natalia has said publicly that she's glad to have avoided being typecast on the back of her first major role as Nancy Wheeler, talking about the casting she said 'As an actor you’re always trying to seek out new things and try different things. It was a very different role and it felt different and that’s exciting. Of course I love playing Nancy – but it’s fun, that’s the point is to explore different people.'
But with mysterious artists, invisible paranormal forces and John Malkovich and Zawe Ashton in the mix we still bet that we're going to love it. In the meantime, here's everything we know about the series so far.
What Is Velvet Buzzsaw About?
Let's get stuck right in with the good stuff, predictably: the plot looks amazing (if not a little spooky). According to IMDB it revolves around 'a series of paintings by an unknown artist' that 'are discovered as a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art' and it's a genre mashup of satire and the supernatural.
From what we can cobble together so far the story is set in the world of elitist art and begins when Jospehine (who works for a gallery owner) finds her apartment filled with strange artworks after the death of a neighbor. A series of deaths follow as intrigue builds around the art. The key characters to watch out for are Morf Vandewalt, an LA art critic and Rhodera Haze, a tempestuous gallery owner and Josephine's nightmare boss.
Who Is Natalia Dyer's Character?
Natalia will play Coco - we don't know much about who the character is but a shot from the series shows her wearing glasses and a backpack makes us think that maybe she's a school-goer.
Who Else Is In The Cast
The lead roles are comprised of a talent smorgasbord of brilliant actors including Jake Gyllenhaal as Morf, a sexually-fluid art critic who's drawn away from his personal trainer boyfriend to Jospehine, played by [Zawe Ashton {href='https://graziadaily.co.uk/life/home/people-need-know-s-happening-need-watch-zawe-ashton-s-documentary-fgm/' target='_blank' rel='noopener noreferrer'} from Fresh Meat).
Natalia Dyer's Coco is also in great company with the rest of the cast, which includes Rene Russo who plays Rhodera and heavyweights like John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnusson and Tom Sturridge.
When Will We Be Able To Watch It?
It'll actually be available sooner than you think (hooray!), the series is scheduled to air on Netflix from February 1st 2019.
What Do The Critics Think?
Although there have been some mixed reviews of Velvet Buzzsaw (not all critics are feeling the schism between genres) Rotten Tomatoes have given it an 85% score with an average of a 7.3/10 rating. That makes it good enough for us to binge on throughout February when the Beast from the East makes it's comeback right?
