It's only been a couple of weeks since the film adaption of Richard Osman's bestselling book, The Thursday Murder Club, hit the big screens - but fans are already impatient for a sequel.
The movie tells the story of four amateur sleuths - Helen Mirren as Elizabeth, a retired spy, Pierce Brosnan as Ron, a retired union leader Ron, Ben Kingsley who plays retired psychiatrist Ibrahim and Celia Imrie as retired nurse Joyce. The four live a quiet life at a retirement village until a crime close to home sees them become caught up in the IRL case. It's the ultimate cosy season whodunnit.
The Thursday Murder Club is the first instalment in the book series by Osman - in total, there's five if you count the book due later this year. Naturally, this means fans are hopeful that there will be a sequel to the film...
Will there be a sequel to The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix?
Netflix hasn't confirmed if The Thursday Murder Club will get a sequel. It will depend how well the film does with viewers. 'It's all based on how many people watch the film over the first weekend, and we will know in about 10 days if we're making a sequel,' director Chris Columbus said in an interview with PA. 'I don't want to speak for everyone else, but I would come back in a second.'
However, in another interview with Film Stories, Columbus said that 'all signs seem to point' to 'a sequel or the next chapter' in the Thursday Murder Club story. He also previously hinted that, if he had it his way, he'd film the next two movies back to back: 'We're at the castle, let's spend 100 days and make both films.'
It all sounds promising, given that the first film is currently the most-watched movie worldwide on Netflix.
It seems Helen Mirren is also on board. She told The Radio Times '[I’d do another] in a nanosecond,' continuing 'And it would be the team getting back together, which would be great. We did have a wonderful time shooting this. So all of us would jump at the chance, quite honestly.'
What will the sequel to The Thursday Murder Club be about?
The plot of The Thursday Murder Club stayed pretty close to the book. This means, if there is a sequel, we can expect it to follow the storyline in the second book, The Man Who Died Twice. The book follows Elizabeth as she receives a letter from a former colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He's suspected of stealing diamonds and is wanted by dangerous men. The four pensioners also return to their sleuthing ways by solving the mystery of a serial killer on the loose - so like in the first film, we can expect plenty of drama.
