Oh, Strictly - how we love you. Sequins and sass, it's one of the highlights of our TV year - and we just can't believe that it's been on our screens since 2004. (Yep, that's almost 20 years - feel old yet?) Over those years, some celebrities have attempted to quickstep, and looked more like fish out of water, on the dance floor.
But there have also been some truly spectacular moments, with some celebrities proving they could have easily pursued a career in dancing. Yep, we're still not over Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice's incredible tribute to the deaf community this year. But here we take a look at some of the most memorable, for better or worse, moments from Strictly.
Max George and Dianne Buswell's Simpsons routine
Oh, oh God. Sorry, but we couldn’t not include the moment Max George - from The Wanted - andDianne Buswell ‘danced’ this Simpsons number in 2019. The yellow face paint, the costumes, the fact Max looks like he’s wearing a pillow under his shirt. Genuinely horrific. Sorry again for reminding you - but you can watch it here.
Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice's tribute
Rose Ayling-Ellis and her partner Giovanni had always been favourites on the 2021 series. But that moment was really solidified when they paid this gorgeous tribute to the deaf community. (Rose herself is deaf, and counts to keep her impeccable timing.) The pair started to dance to Symphony by Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson - but, halfway through, the music stopped so they could dance in silence, in one of the most powerful TV moments on Strictly.
Alexandra Burke receiving the most 39-point scores in history
In season fifteen, a Strictly Come Dancing record was broken as former X-factor contestant and Broken Heels singer Alexandra Burke scored the most by scoring the most 39s in the show’s history. She surpassed the record set by Hollyoaks star Ricky Whittle during season seven. Burke proved herself to be an incredible dancer, with one of her most memorable performances being her and partner Gorka Marquez’s jive to Proud Mary.
Bill Bailey being unexpectedly incredible
In season 18, it was clear that Bill Bailey was cast as a ‘comedy competitor’. People expected his time in the Strictly competition to be short-lived. But he surprised audiences by being… well, amazing. He and Oti Mabuse made the perfect dance partners and blew Strictly fans’ minds with Bailey’s incredible rhythm. It’s hard to pick the best moment for him, but we’ll have to go with his iconic Tango to Enter Sandman. Who knew you could make dancing to Metallica sexy?
Caroline Flack's show dance
Back in 2014, the late Caroline Flack lifted the Glitterball Trophy with her partner Pasha Kovalev. And the presenter is still regarded as one of the best contestants to ever grace the Strictly floor. In their highlights show last year, Strictly remembered Caroline’s best dance - her showdance - a routine that the notoriously hard-to-impress Craig Revel-Horwood called beautiful.
Ed Balls performing to Gangnam Style
Broadcaster and politician Ed Balls used to be famous for tweeting his own name when he meant to search for it to see what people were saying, an accident that was memorialised and celebrated annually as ‘Ed Balls Day’. But after his partaking in Strictly Come Dancing, he’s now known for his unforgettable performance of Gangnam Style. There’s no entertainment like watching a politician bounce around clumsily.
The first-ever 40 score
Every Strictly Come Dancing competitor dreams of achieving a perfect score of ‘40’ from the sometimes hard-to-please judges, but EastEnders star Jill Halfpenny and partner Darren Bennet were the first to make it happen in season two with their incredible jive performed to Lady in Red. 22 couples have managed it since, including Georgia May Foote and Giovanni Pernice and Ore Oduba and Joanne Clifton.
