The way The Simpsons’ Waylon Smithers looks at Mr Burns has always seemed pretty gay to us. And now the assistant to Springfield’s evilest billionaire is to come out as gay.

One of the show's bosses, Al Jean, told TV Line: ‘In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t. We deal with that in two episodes. We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.’

Smithers’ unrequited adoration for Burns has been the subject of a many a wink-wink nudge-nudge ‘oh look at this funny gay man acting gay and doing gay stuff’ joke on the show, and maybe, it seems as if gay jokes – at least the ones just lolling at gay people for being a bit gay – just aren’t funny as it’s 2015...
