This morning, Sara Ramirez was trending on Google. Why? Well, because they're the breakout star of Sex and The City reboot And Just Like That. Last night, the new show aired for the first time and fans were quick to get searching for 'the new Samantha'.
While Samantha has not been replaced on the show (they explain her absence early on) Sara Ramirez is the new main cast member and fourth friend of the group. Now, everyone has A LOT of questions about the actor. Namely, who Sara Ramirez's husband is (eye roll)... but mostly, viewers just want to know more about their new favourite SATC friend.
So, who is Sara Ramirez?
Sara Ramirez is a 40-year-old actor, activist and singer best known for their role in Grey’s Anatomy. Originally born in Mexico, the actor moved to America when they were eight years old and eventually graduated from Juilliard School with an arts degree.
The star came out as non-binary last year, and it's confirmed that their character in And Just Like That will be genderqueer too. While Sara previously said they were comfortable with people using 'she/they' pronouns to describe them, the actor said earlier this year that they now prefer the singular 'they'.
Sara is also bisexual, and spoke emotionally about how the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida in 2016 inspired them to come out.
'Coming out publicly was something that I was afraid of because I was concerned that it would affect my career in a negative way,' Sara said as part of People magazine’s Coming Out Stories in 2018. 'I was afraid of the discrimination I might face, not just outside Hollywood, but inside.'
'As the years went by, and as the political climate intensified, and as I continued to read and hear about the countless forms of violence perpetrated against us, including the Orlando shooting at Pulse nightclub, an organic, incremental urgency to use my platform to empower those who are part of these communities that I’m a part of came over me in a way that I’ve never felt before.'
Is Sara Ramirez the new Samantha?
While many have called them so, technically Sara Ramirez isn't 'the new Samantha'. The producers of And Just Like That haven’t replaced Kim Cattrall, but rather removed Samantha’s character from the show entirely and introduced a new friend to the group, who Sara will play.
Sara plays Che Diaz, the first non-binary queer character in the ‘Sex and the City’ world. ‘They are a Mexican Irish American person who identifies as non-binary, they are bisexual, and they are a very dynamic, funny character that comes in and sort of challenges other characters internalised oppression,’ Sara told The New York Post. ‘They are a character who unapologetically speaks their truth.’
‘Che is very much a sexually empowered person and they do not shy away from getting to know people,’ they added, speaking on the character’s sexuality.
The actor has been extremely excited to join the show, saying ‘The surreal aspect of meeting Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis was really wild. Even on our last days filming, I remember mentioning how it sort of hasn’t sunk in yet.’
What are some of Sara Ramirez's other TV shows and movies?
You might recognise Sara Ramirez from shows like Grey’s Anatomy, in which they play the main character Dr Callie Torres, the former head of orthopaedic surgery and board member at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Sara has starred in 241 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.
Alongside their role in Grey's Anatomy, Sara has also starred in various television series', including 55 episodes of Sofia the First, Madam Secretary, and Law and Order.
They also had a small part in Spiderman as an unnamed police officer.
Who is Sara Ramirez's husband, and do they have a daughter?
The star is married to business analyst and banker Ryan DeBolt. Since their casting in And Just Like That , search has sparked for Sara Ramirez’s daughter, but the actor does not actually have a child.
There were several rumours around Sara Ramirez being pregnant a few years ago, but turned out to be untrue. Much like the rumours concerning Sara’s pregnancy, a lot of fake information surfaced on the Internet regarding Ryan and Sara’s supposed divorce. All of these, however, were completely fabricated as the couple is still very much together.

We shudder at the thought of the costume department's shoe wardrobe (it must be similar to when our heroine found herself let loose in the cupboard at Vogue), and love these patent and super stacked Mary-Janes. The necklace has become a new signature of Carrie's, and is from Fry Powers.
