Who is Ruth Negga?
Pah, you're so missing out mate. She is the Irish/Ethiopian actress currently taking Hollywood and the telly world by storm.
She was born in Addis Ababa in 1982 (34 this year maths fans) and lived there until she was seven when her Ethiopian father died and her Irish mother moved them back to Ireland.
Ruth Negga's movies and TV shows
Her big break came in 2004's Breakfast in Pluto, after that she was in E4's Misfits, played Shirley Bassey in the BBC2 biopic Shirley, was in Brad Pitt's tank film Fury, Brad Pitt's zombie film World War Z, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, the Warcraft film and now Preacher and Loving. Not a bad haul. That is a lot more films and TV shows than I have been in.
Ruth Negga as Tulip in The Preacher
If you need some persuading about whether or not to get into Preacher, let Ruth Negga be it. She stars in this surrealist crime comedy drama as Tulip, a no-nonsense once-partner to Dominic Cooper's Preacher. She drives an awesome car, beats the shit out of bad guys and grew up in the sticks of Texas. She gives good attitude and wears great clothes. In short, Tulip is who you want to be when you grow up.
Ruth Negga in Loving
You probably saw all the press praising upcoming film Loving from Cannes. People couldn't get enough. The film, set in 1958, tells the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interacial couple in Virginia who were sentenced to prison because of their marriage. The film is due out in February next year in the UK (hello Oscars) but until then, check out this HBO documentary on the subject *The Loving Story *so you can get some context. What's the deal with Ruth Negga and Dominic Cooper?
Well, as well as starring together as the will they / won't they again Preacher and Tulip in Preacher, they're also together IRL. And have been for six whole years! The two met when they starred in the National Theatre's 2009 production of Phaedra, where they played lovers. Rumour has it Amanda Seyfried was dating Dominic at the time but after an on/off situation, Dominic and Ruth ended up together.
