Ratched: All The Best Looks From TV’s Most Stylish New Show

In a key scene early in the first episode we see Mildred transform her look with this yellow skirt suit and immediately we get a sense of the importance of costume in the show.

Looking a far cry from Miranda in Sex & The City, Cynthia Nixon plays Ratched's love interest Gwendolyn Briggs.

Sophie Okonedo, although only appearing in a handful of episodes, works to steal the spotlight with her dreamy costumes.

Sharon Stone plays eccentric heiress Lenore Osgood, a part written for her by Murphy. 'I took that pretty seriously' she says 'because he had written great parts for great women in the past... for older women like myself.'

13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn plays a pretty unlikeable character in Ratched, but you'll find it hard not to love his outfits.

Lou Eyrich says that Sarah Paulson was incredibly hands-on during the costume design process. 'She really wanted to know the backstory and what the arc was, so we would have many conversations in the fittings with Sarah before we would move forward.'

Costume designer Rebecca Guzzi says of working on the show: 'I'd never done the 1940s before, and it was incredible to do it with this noir tone.'

Sophie's part in Ratched sees her playing Charlotte Wells, someone dealing with multiple personality disorder.

'Sharon Stone is a trained hairdresser' says Head of Hair, Chris Clark. 'So Sharon had a lot of influence into her design, which was really fun. The lavishness of that character and the costumes she wore, played a huge part in the look that we developed for Sharon. There was a little bit of a 30s look with a little bit of an early 40s look. It kept her out of the world in a weird way and in her own sphere.

The costume team felt strongly that Mildred was a character who didn't possess a lot and someone who uses clothes as camouflage and a form of armour.

Head of Makeup, Eryn Krueger Mekash​ says 'in ​Ratched,​ everybody has a very beautiful shade of red lipstick on, even the nurses have a nice shade of red.'

Lenore's costumes are, arguably, some of the most opulent in Ratched.

Chris Clark says of Cynthia Nixon's character: 'Gwendolyn was someone that the creative team made a very deliberate choice with when it came to her styling. The position she is in as a career woman at the time meant that she had to give off this level of polish and sophistication,'

Guzzi says that the wardrobe team had an enormous box that consisted solely of nurse dress prototypes. 'Then that's just one part of it because then when they go outside they need a cape and a hat.' Eyrich adds that working on the capes was a great example of how wonderful it is to collaborate with Murphy.

Costume designer Lou Eyrich says that in the beginning of the design process 'it was all about the hospital's inhabitants. Everything had to be custom made, but it was all about the perfect shade of green and then different tonal degrees off of that so that everybody wasn't in the same shade.'

Hats are a large part of the costuming within the show.
