Fan’s of Friends all around the world know and love the song Smelly Cat. It is arguably one of TVs most iconic songs, but if you need a little reminder, the chorus went like this:
‘smelly cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you? smelly cat, smelly cat, it's not your fault’.
The writer of the song Betsy Borns told Refinery29 that the song was drawn from her own experiences as she had ‘a really stinky, smelly dog’, but it was (thankfully) later determined that the use of ‘cat’ was funnier. The lyrics were a labour of love by Born, but she also got help from Lisa Kudrow who came up with the melody, and Chrissie Hynde who was a guest starring in the episode.
Can you imagine the alternative universe that Friends would have turned into?!
There would be no storyline of Phoebe’s old singing partner selling the song to a cat litter company. Or no heart-warming tale of when Phoebe met her estranged father- where it was revealed he sung a lullaby with the same melody as 'Smelly Cat' to her as a baby.
Who knows, Smelly Dog could have become an even more popular song (if that’s possible), but the idea doesn’t sit well with our nostalgic love for Smelly Cat.
