While coming-of-age comedies are a dime a dozen these days, Overcompensating, which debuted on Amazon on 16th May this year, seems to stand head and shoulders above the rest.
The show was created by Benito Skinner who also stars as Benny, a closeted freshman in his first year of college trying to come to terms with his sexuality. The show also stars Wally Baram as Benny’s new best friend Carmen, actress and comedian Mary Beth Barone as his older sister Grace, White Lotus’s Adam DiMarco as her frat bro boyfriend, and the hilarious actress, comedian and writer Holmes as Carmen’s roommate Hailee. Other stars include Lukas Gage, Connie Britton, and Kaia Gerber.
Considering the show has been a hit with viewers and critics alike, little wonder fans are already begging for a second series.
Here’s everything we know so far about Overcompensating season two…
Will there be an Overcompensating Season 2?
If the show’s creator and star Benito Skinner has anything to do with it, we will be getting a second series, and he’s already got it all planned out.
He told Variety, ‘I think I know what I want to do and there’s so much more we want to say. There will be backslide, and that’s what that finale is. This journey of becoming yourself and overcompensating, it’s a rollercoaster and at times I think college can be so selfish and you can be like, it’s every man for himself.’
He added, ‘It’s drugs and alcohol and feelings and we didn’t want to stray from that, and we want to continue it.’
In another interview, Benito hinted that there are 'so many stories' they want to explore. 'We’re so inspired by this cast and some of the people who came in for one day. We got Connie [Britton] and Kyle [MacLachlan] for, like for days total, and what they’ve done in this show is remarkable,' he said.
'Caleb Heron was there for one day. Owen Thiele was there for like three. There’s so much more to say in that experience of someone who’s in the closet versus out, and the friction and finding friendship and that. Also, the siblings! There’s so much to say here, and if you’ve seen the finale, you know that they might have to talk. I think we’re ready to go. I mean, we’ve pitched it. We’re ready.'
Adam DiMarco, who played jock Peter, teased, ‘I know what Benny has planned for season two if we get one, and it’s insane, it’s so good. I wish I could tell you.’
Mary Beth Barrone, who co-starred as Benny's older sister Grace, also admitted she was eager for a second series so that her and Benito’s characters can ‘finally be honest with each other about who they are and how they make each other feel.’
Holmes spoke about her hopes for her character Hailee if there was another season. 'I do want to see what her love life, for real, looks like when she lets it feel. That person is obviously using people to feed her own, honestly anger. I think that Hailee is really angry about the oppression of women, deep down. I think that she doesn’t know that yet, but I think she’s pissed, you know?' she said.
'And so, I’d like to see her get some real feelings because we saw them [in season one], but then we saw her funnel them into sort of action or insanity, or not fully feel them. So, I’d like her to have a real crush or I’d love like just a night of her and Carmen, where when you’re roommates and you’re up all night - like the kind of nights that Carmen and Benny, we’ve got to see. I want to see that with Hailee.'
So far, there has been no official announcement whether or not we’ll see a second series.
When will the second season of Overcompensating air?
Since we don’t have an official announcement yet, there is no airdate just yet. It will likely be 2027, but we’d love to see it sooner.
Who will star in the second season of Overcompensating?
While the season one cast seem keen to reprise their roles, Benito also has his eyes on a certain guest star - Pedro Pascal.
Benito told Variety, ‘Come play Carmen’s daddy, or whoever you want! Any daddy, any teacher, we need you.’
