The 2017 Oscars Nominations

It seems only yesterday that Leonardo Di Caprio finally won his Oscar, doesn’t it? But alas, we’ve reached the 89th Academy Awards and the nominations for 2017 are in.

Here’s you need to know…

La La Land smashed it. Obvs

lala1

La La Land surpassed expectations as the one to watch and has matched another record. Having racked up seven awards at the Golden Globes earlier this month, La La Land has also received 14 Oscars nominations, which is a really big deal. It’s hit as many nominations as Titanic earned back in 1998. Big. Deal.

Emma Stone is up for best actress and Ryan Gosling is up for best actor, while the film is also up for best supporting actor, picture, director, original screenplay, song, director, cinematography, costume design, production design, sound mixing and sound editing. Is it too soon to hedge bets on a solid run of wins?

Moving away from #OscarsSoWhite

Conversation around the 2015 and 2016 ceremonies were largely dominated by #OscarsSoWhile and the lack of diversity among the nominated actors.

Refreshingly though, Moonlight, a film that follows the life of a young black in Miami, came in joint second with Arrival with both receiving eight nominations. This year there are also non-white actors in each of the acting categories. Ruth Negga has been nominated for best actress for her performance in Loving, Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) are all up for best supporting actress, Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Dev Patel (Lion) are up for best supporting actor and Denzel Washington is nominated for best actor for his role in Fences.

Meryl Streep bossed it. Again.

Isn't she just great? The answer is yes. She give the speech of all speeches when she accepted her Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes this year, and now she has just made history. Meryl Streep is now the most nominated performer that the Oscars has ever seen, having now earned her 20th nomination for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins.
