Like a normal, responsible person who values a good night’s sleep, you didn’t stay up ‘til 5am watching the Oscars last night. Wise. But you don’t want to be left out of all the post-awards chat in the office today, so it’s now time to hurriedly scroll through all the live-tweets from the night to find key talking points.
Or you could just read our round-up of the need-to-know moments and save yourself the tedium of people screaming ‘I DIDN’T SEE THIS FILM SO I DON’T THINK IT SHOULD HAVE WON’ into the void. Whatever feels right.
1. LEO FINALLY WON AN OSCAR
And he was so, so happy.
He smiled. He thanked everyone, ever. He talked about climate change. It was a great Leo moment.
We feel a little sad and deflated about the whole thing though, tbh. No longer can we create sad Leonardo memes. All the excitement and build-up is gone forever. Who do we root for now? Whose disappointed face will we gif up now? A win for Leo, a sad, sad loss for the internet.
2. It was a night of mistaken identity
Over on E!’s red carpet review, Sandy Powell – costume designer for Cinderella AND Carol – was mistaken for Tilda Swinton. Giuliana Rancic and Kris Jenner discussed how great ‘Tilda’ looked in her Bowie tribute outfit, and how ‘Tilda’ is the only person who could pull off that hair, for a good six minutes.
Meanwhile, beauty website Total Beauty thought Whoopi Goldberg was Oprah. It was very embarrassing.
3. Chris Rock didn’t hold back on the #OscarsSoWhite criticism
Chris lived up to expectations by refusing to stay silent on the massive controversy surrounding this year’s Oscars: the absence of people of colour nominated for awards.
His opening monologue brilliantly summed up why this issue is so important, without laying all the blame on the Academy Awards themselves. He reminded everyone that Hollywood’s lack of diversity has been going on since the beginning of film, and that change needs to happen at a much bigger level.
'We want opportunity,' said Chris. 'We want the black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors. That’s it.' Well said.
4. Meanwhile, Reverend Al Sharpton led anti-Oscars protests outside the Dolby Theatre
Sharpton declared this year to be ‘the last all-white Oscars’, waving an Oscars statue painted white.
5. Stacey Dash was brought out on stage and everyone was confused
The same woman who called the Oscars boycotts 'ridiculous' and said we shouldn’t have Black History Month was brought out on stage to, um, wish everyone a happy Black History Month.
We think it was a strange, meta, self-aware joke. But it was just SO WEIRD. She trended on Twitter, mostly due to everyone’s overwhelming confusion. Chrissy Teigen made this face in response:
6. Jacob Tremblay and Abraham Atta presented an award and it was the CUTEST
Jacob was too small to reach the microphone so Chris Rock had to bring out a box – which, sadly, placed him too far away from the mic to be properly heard. The whole thing was adorable.
7. Joe Biden and Lady Gaga teamed up to make a powerful statement about sexual assault
The U.S. vice president surprised everyone by arriving on stage to urge everyone to pledge to intervene whenever sexual consent is not or cannot be given, ending with a moving reminder that anyone who has been assaulted ‘did nothing wrong’.
He introduced Lady Gaga, who performed Til It Happens To You surrounded by survivors of sexual assault. It was incredibly moving, and Gaga received a standing ovation.
8. Chris Rock used the event to sell his daughter’s Girl Scout cookies
An update on Ellen DeGeneres’ pizza bit. All that Hollywood cash helped to raise more than $65,000.
9. Sam Smith dedicated his award to the LGBT community
People were NOT pleased that Sam Smith won best song for Writing’s On The Wall ahead of The Weeknd and Lady Gaga. But he balanced out all the internet rage by dedicating his award to all LGBT people everywhere. Which was nice.
10. Mad Max picked up loads of awards, but Spotlight won the big one
Seriously, thank f**** The Revenant* didn’t win ANOTHER award. It was all getting bloody boring and we were silently hoping for a bear attack.
Mad Max managed to land awards for costume design, makeup, and sound early on, while The Revenant’s Alejandro González Iñárritu won best director.
But Spotlight was the film that won the biggie: Best Film. We’re very pleased because it’s a brilliant film on an important topic. Everyone should probably watch it now it’s an Oscar winner.
