He’s only been president for a few months, yet Trump’s presence has already filtered its way down into our favourite TV shows as many programmes are choosing to highlight how his position in the White House represents a particularly tumultuous time for global politics.
On the run up to the election a lot of programmes showed their characters rallying behind presidential candidates Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, yet in the time between these episodes being released and the new seasons being written, something that nobody could have (or at least wanted to) predict actually happened: Trump won the election.
And the latest programme to demonstrate their feelings towards the election results is *Broad City. *When the show returns to Comedy Central for its fourth season it will bleep out all uses of Trump’s name.
Broad City has a reputation for being politically outspoken as they have previously invited Hilary Clinton on for a guest spot in an episode where Ilana pledges to campaign for the then hopeful candidate.
In an interview with USA Today,* Broad City* co-creator Ilana Glazer said, ‘we wrote (season 4) being like, “here we go! Hilary for president!”, but after ‘this game-show host became president of our country, we rewrote a lot.’
Glazer decided to censor Trump’s name as though it were a curse word as she said, ‘there’s no airtime for this orange (person), we bleep his name the whole season.’
An episode of the new season, which premiered at Colossal Clusterfest in San Francisco earlier this month, centres around Ilana’s inability to reach an orgasm now that Trump is president because her ‘powers are decreasing during the current administration because it’s just so hard to (orgasm) when you know so many people are in such danger. So Ilana works through her Trump-related (hang-up) and it’s wild.’
It’s great to see programmes, especially ones aimed at young women, taking such a strong political standpoint and emphasising how certain aspects Trump’s behaviour should not be normalised and should be protested against whenever necessary.
