And so the Friends reunion rumour mill trundles on, again playing it’s cruel, cruel game of dangling the dream and taking it away.
This time though, it’s positive news. Speaking to Chris Evans on his Radio 2 show, Matthew Perry said, ‘I don’t know what the price would be, but I think the actors would be open to it. We’d be open to doing something – some kind of TV special – I don’t know about a movie. It’s kind of tough because we ended on such a high note that we don’t want to ruin it.’
He continued, ‘We want to be really careful because sometimes when you do a reunion it’s terrible and it sort of ruins the memory of the good show that you’ve done before. But I think the cast would be open to doing something at some point.’
When Chris Evans asked if the gang had talked about a reunion IRL, Matthew again had positive news. ‘We’ve talked about it a little bit over dinner, we like to get together for dinner and we have a good time together. It’s a really good group, there isn’t a jerk in the group and that really saved us for 10 years.’
The biggest thing to come out of the interview though? Matthew doesn’t have a monkeys about what went on during three years of filming the show. Singer Guy Garvey asked the actor what his least favourite Friends episode was prompting Matthew to say, ‘I don’t remember three years of it, so none of those....’
]You were pretty out of it at the time?’ asks Chris. ‘I was a little out of it at the time ... Somewhere between seasons three and six.’
As has been well-documented, Matthew suffered from addiction issues. First to painkillers in 1997 for which he completed a rehabilitation programme. Later, in 2001, he again enterted rehab to be treated for addiction to opioids, alcohol and amphetamines. Today he lobbies for funding for drug courts and, at one time owned his own sober-living facility to help other recovering addicts.
Because we’re the douchebag generation that likes to take a serious issue like addiction and make it all about US, fans are now struggling to come to terms with the things that Matthew Perry might not have remembered. Things like Ross and Rachel going on a break (although considering how much mileage they got out of that he’d have to have been really out of it) and the one with Chandler’s hypnosis tape – where he became a ‘strong and confident woman’.
Also forgotten might be the first appearance of the chick and the duck, the time Chandler peed on Monica on the beach and that whole shebang with Joey’s girlfriend Kathy that ended up with Chandler spending some thinking time alone in a giant box.
And then there’s London, and Chandler hooking up with Monica for the first time. That one definitely hurts the most. Roll on the reunion pls.
