It's high bloody time Marvel introduced us to a new kick-ass super heroine - not that the Black Widow isn't great. And it seems as though our prayers have finally been answered, as Jessica Jones is the next Marvel superhero set to make an appearace on Netflix. Here's everything you need to know about the woman who's going to be domniating Netflix screens across the country.
Oh, and if you have any plans this weekend then you're probably going to want to cancel them.
Release Date
Jessica Jones will be making her debut on November 20th – and in true Netflix fashion all of the episodes will be hitting our screens at once. The latest Marvel series comes just seven months after the well-recieved adaption of Daredevil that premiered in April. And don't think this is the last we'll be hearing from Marvel either – Jessica Jones is just the second of four planned series they have up their sleeves that are due to make an appearance on Netflix.
Who is Jessica Jones?
Originally born Jessica Campbell, Jess changed her surname after her family died in a car accident and she was adopted by the Jones family. Not only was Jessica the only one to surive the crash, but she also awoke with superhuman powers (classic Marvel) and eventually took on the persona of Jewel. Sadly her superhero days were short lived as she soon fell prey to The Purple Man, and for eight months he used his power of mind control to send her on a mission to kill Daredevil (and so the story interlinking begins). Thankfully, Jessica managed to shake it off (T-Swizzle would be proud) and has since taken up the role of a Private Detective.
Oh and here's another fun fact for you, Jessica Jones was in the same class as Peter Parker at school - and rumour has it she had quite the crush on him.
Jessica Jones's Super Powers
When Jessica's family died in a car accident she was exposed to a whole bunch of chemicals being carried by the military convoy they collided with. As a result of this she was gifted with superhuman powers, such as strength, durability and flight. It's also thought that Jessica is less vulnerable to harm than your average Joe. When threatened at gunpoint she famously says: "You shoot that gun at me - I will pull that bullet out of my ruined four hundred dollar leather jacket and I will shove it up your ass with my pinky finger. And which one of us do you think that will hurt more?" We told you she was a bad-ass.
Jessica Jones: The Cast
Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones
Krysten Ritter has been cast as the series leading lady, though you may also recognise her from Breaking Bad and The Bitch In Apartment 23. Krysten has previously admitted that she's never imaged herself in a superhero role before: "I don't like superheroes that we've all seen in that female form with the outfit and the boobs and the big hair - that's just not me." So why did Jessica Jones change her mind? Because she's "a strong badass, though female character that we haven't really seen before" - obviously.
David Tennant as The Purple Man
Most known for portraying Dr Who in the hit BBC series, it seems as though David Tennant has decided to turn to the dark side for the role of The Purple Man. Already an enemy to the Daredevil, The Purple Man's main purpose in life is to regain total control of Jessica Jones.
Mike Colter as Luke Cage
Luke Cage is another Marvel superhero set to get his own Netflix series in the future, which is fair enough give that he has super strength and basically impenetrable skin. The Good Wife's Mike Colter will be taking up the role of Luke Cage in both series adaptations.
Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeryn Hogarth
Although lawyer and attorney Jeryn Hogarth is typecast as a man in the comic book adapation of Jennifer Jones, Marvel have decided to gender flip the role and have cast The Matrix's Carrie-Anne Moss for the part. There's also rumours floating about that Jeryn Hogarth will be the second instance of an explicity gay or bisexual character in the Marvel Comic Universe.
Rachel Taylor as Trish Walker
Trish Walker is a radio TV host and more importanly best friend to Jessica Jones and is played by Rachel Taylor, who's previously starred in Grey's Anatomy and Transformers.
Jessica Jones and Luke Cage
Ok this is where shit gets even more interesting. Not only do Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have similar superpowers (hello superhuman strength and super resistant skin) as well as their own Netflix spin-off shows, but the two are also romantically involved. Who saw that coming? (Fine, I guess we all did). It's unclear whether or not their romance will blossom in the first series of Jessica Jones, though.
