If there's one show that never fails to deliver on drama, it's Married At First Sight. After all, what can be more dramatic than experts matching people romantically, who they meet for the very first time on their wedding day?
One of the couple's whose journey we've been following closely is Carina Mirabile and Paul Antoine from MAFS Australia. If you need a recap, Carina shocked viewers when she left her on-screen husband Paul in tears as she dumped him at the alter at their Final Vows. This heart-wrenching moment shattered their title as one of the strongest couples on the show.
The couple reunited on the MAFS Reunion Commitment Ceremony on Monday. Paul and Carina still weren't on good terms at the reunion. 'I had suspicions that she obviously had a lot of insecurities, that she obviously had crazy jealousy tendencies and she proved my point at Final Vows,' Paul told producers before his reunion entrance.
He continued: 'There's no hope whatsoever with me and Carina - she is a big snob. I was giving her the benefit of the doubt at some point but she certainly is 100 per cent.'
Carina also admitted that she wasn't looking forward to seeing Paul on her way to the reunion. 'I feel like there's an ickiness towards Paul in my gut. I wouldn't say I am excited to see him,' she said. I'm very uncomfortable. Honestly, I cant even look Paul in the eyes. We've gone from husband and wife to complete strangers.'
The awkward vibes continued throughout the pre dinner soiree. 'The vibe between Paul and I is really weird. We are both in different spaces. I don't know how to act around him,' Carina said at the dinner. Paul went on to call Carina 'judgemental' and said she wasn't able to 'take much criticism' throughout the experiment.
Eeek. But since the reunion, which was filmed in November, it's been reported that any awkwardness between the pair has now gone, with Carina talking to Yahoo Lifestyle about where the couple stand with each other.
'When we saw each other in person, I kind of did say some, not snarky comments, but I threw some digs out there and really put him in his place and that kind of thing,' she said. 'But at the end of the day, we’re civil and we're friends. I wish him all the best, and all I could ask is for him to find the right person that's best for him. You know when you have kids with someone and you're co-parenting and you’re just civil? I don't have the kids with him, but we were just essentially co-parenting and fine under the same roof.'
Carina even told Yahoo she would 'absolutely' consider Paul a friend. 'Obviously, we don't talk about our relationship or future relationships or if we're looking for someone at all. We just talk about what's going to come after the experiment and future plans and his business idea, and I'm just here to listen and give advice,' she said. 'We're fine, it’s not like a Jacqui [Burfoot] and Ryan [Donnelly] situation whatsoever where we cannot be in the same room. With Paul, we’re friends. It’s all love.'
As for any chance at a rekindling? That's off the cards. 'We probably could reconnect and go down that avenue, but no, I'm not young anymore, and I'm not wasting any more time. My time is super precious and so is my energy, so I need to adhere to that and stick to my wits,' she said.
