The Excitement Around Ovie’s Eggs Shows Just How Low The Bar Is Set For Love Island’s Men

It’s fair to say that last night’s episode of Love Island wasn’t the most action-packed so far.

Aside from the savage (and pretty wasteful) ‘Side Bar’ challenge which saw contestants read out headlines about the show and throw a drink in the face of the person or people they thought the headline was about, there wasn’t much drama.

Perhaps that’s why a scene of Ovie cooking eggs for everyone in the villa has garnered so much attention. The basketball player made all kinds of eggs; poached, fried, scrambled, and stressed the importance of seasoning.

‘You’ve got to have basic seasoning, very basic’ he said to camera.

‘You throw some salt in there, throw some pepper, and a little bit of garlic. Your breath might be a bit manky, but your taste buds are definitely going to appreciate it.’

Cue the usual outpouring of love and appreciation for one of the nation’s favourite Love Island contestants, but on top of this regular Ovie love, there were calls of ‘give Ovie his own cooking show!’ and ‘Ovie should open a restaurant!’

Now don’t get us wrong, we really do love Ovie – we’ve even written an ode to him, listing all the reasons why he’s one of our favourite contestants this season – but this excitement around Ovie’s eggs just shows how low the bar is set for the men of Love Island.

A 28-year-old man knowing that seasoning is essential to cooking a flavourful meal shouldn’t be sending Twitter into a meltdown. But compared to Jordan making Anna a sandwich with a ketchup heart for her birthday, and Tommy confessing his mum does all his cooking, before creating a dish that lead people to believe he was the chef at the much-ridiculed disaster Fyre Festival, we can see why Ovie’s diverse egg offering is impressive.

In comparison to the women on the show who are expected to not only be stunning 24/7, but also; everyone’s type, someone you can take home to your parents, someone you’d want to marry and have children with, someone with ‘a bit about them’, sexy but not too honest about their sexual desires, a good communicator but not talk about their feelings all the time, someone who is attentive but not too needy, and old enough not to be seen as ‘chadlish’ but not too old, the bar for women seems to be set quite a bit higher than for the men.

And even if you are all those things, your partner’s head might still be turned. Fast forward to the previews of tonight’s episode where Jordan – who has been head over heels for Anna since he entered the villa (apart from that slight Jourdan blip) – suddenly starts fancying India. Great.
