Love Island: Is It OK To Be Mad At Hugo For Not Fancying Anyone?

Love Island fans are starting to question wether he will ever make a connection in the villa...

Hugo Amy Love Island

Hugo Hammond has returned from his leave of absence on screen and is right back at the top of twitter conversation.

Pre-Casa Amor Hugo had been settled on friend Island after coupling up with Chloe Burrowsand Sharon Gaffka. But after he brought back Amy from Casa Amor – we all thought okay, perhaps Hugo will be giving this Love Island thing a shot.

However, on last night’s Love Island Hugo voiced his concern to Teddy on the dwindling spark between him and Amy. He revealed he didn’t feel like their dynamic was the same since returning from Casa Amor. The P.E teacher admitted that their conversations had lost its excitement.

After speaking to Teddy, he pulled Amy for a “chit-chat-choo” to voice his feelings. He then friend-zoned Amy and compared their relationship to a spontaneous summer fling that fizzles out when once you get home – nice.

Hugo stated, “I think I’m a man who knows what he wants.” That’s questionable …

However, there are two sides to this argument …

Some Love Island fans argue that Hugo has been given chance after chance and hasn’t connected with anyone. The villa God’s sent in Georgia Townend – who was his physical type to a ‘T’ and AJ Bunker who was very keen to be with him. He ended up shutting them both down.

Then in Casa Amorthere were 5 beautiful women to choose from – he did eventually choose Amy. However, even then after that his movements were questionable. For example, after kissing her for the first time his “job done “line was just awful. He made it seem more like a tick-box exercise than a romantic gesture.

Irrespective of Casa Amor, he’s been there since day one and we are yet to see a love arc, triangle, square…anything would be nice at this point! It seem’s he’s just there enjoying the sun, cocktails and views – the free holiday.

Hugo also seems to cut off connections very quickly or firmly close the door. With Georgia it took all of a day to decide there was nothing there. He doesn’t really take the time to get to know the women deeply – it’s like he’s got a huge block up and won’t open his mind to anyone beyond his ideal type.

He just comes across as someone who is very fussy with his choice of women. Love Island is an experience like none other and they bring in different people from all over the country who want to find love (amongst other things). If there is any place to broaden your horizons and go for something other than your usual type - it's in the Love Island villa. Perhaps Hugo needs to chill out with the his strict list of needs and just enjoy the process...

On the other hand...

On the other side of things, the aim of the game is to find love and maybe Hugo is just being true to his feelings. He hasn’t found a spark in the villa and rather than leading Amy on he’s just being honest.

Whilst reflecting in the beach hut he said, “It would be very easy to be a yes man, go along with everything and fake it … but I don’t want to fake it.” That is a fair point he has been very straight up with his feelings and has not led anyone up the garden path. But is he taking away a place from someone like ex- islander Aaron Francis who was very open to making connections?

Another point as controversial as it might be is whether we would we be questioning a woman for not fancying anyone. In traditional relationships and dating (and certainly in the Love Island bubble), men are meant to do the chasing and advancing. Maybe Hugo sees this as an added pressure - we have seen he is already quite awkward with his chat up lines.

Or perhaps the block Hugo had put up is a defence mechanism and is just a glimpse into some insecurity he has in the villa. After all, there are a lot of big characters and blossoming relationships happening around him - and it just hasn’t worked out for Hugo….

Furthermore, maybe this quick way of dating is not for him, and he prefers things to blossom out of friendships (Remember his brief attempt at a romantic connection with fellow islander and bestie Chloe Burrows). Perhaps ultimately this Love Island dating experience is just not for him.

Previously fans of the show have also suggested the relationship between Amy and Hugo is one sided. There have been many opinions voiced stating Amy never really liked Hugo and saw him as a ticket into the main villa. This is another fair point as Amy’s eyes were originally on Tyler but after his eyes wondered to Clarisse, she switched her attention to Hugo. In fact, upon entering the villa Amy didn’t even mention Hugo as one of her top three love interests.

So, whether you think he deserves another chance, or is just overly fussy – Hugo’s moves remain a continuous topic of social media discussion.

Last night we were left on a cliff hanger and Hugo and Amy are on the chopping block as one of the public’s least favourite couples – Alongside Mary and Sam and Clarisse and Tyler.

Does Hugo deserve another chance, or is his time up on the island?
