I know what you’re thinking, US remakes of UK comedy shows never go well (apart from The Office, long live Michael Scott). Let’s face it, the States’ version of The Inbetweeners should have never been aired. Yet, I’m willing to look past that because this adaptation of Camping has a killer cast.
The Girls creator, along with her co-creator Jenni Connor will write the US adaptation. The show’s original creator, Julia Davis is also on board to executive produce and HBO have ordered 8 episodes, all half an hour long. Buzzing.
The story follows married couple Walt and Kathryn, who decide to take a, you guessed it, camping trip for Walt’s 45th birthday. What’s intended to be a happy, delightful occasion, is scuppered by the arrival of Kathryn’s meek sister, a holier-than-thou best friend and a free-spirited tag along. With all those characters in one place, it’s bound to be a weekend full of laughs and antics. According to HBO, it ‘becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman on woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten.’
So, who’s due to star in the sitcom? I hear you cry.
Non-other than Jennifer Garner herself. Garner will play Kathryn, an obsessively organised wife, who gathers her nearest and dearest to ‘get back in touch with nature.’
David Tennant (10th Doctor sex god) has also joined the cast playing Garner’s husband, Walt. He’s described as an obedient husband and loving father, who’s discontent about what he’s signed up for subtly eats away at him.
Juliette Lewis (Iron Maven from 2009’s Whip It!) is playing the role of Jandice. She’s a woman of many talents. She’s a DJ, a reiki healer and a certified public accountant. Her life is seemingly ideal, bouncing from man to man to woman to man — but the reality is far less ideal.
It’s also recently been announced that Ione Skye has joined the cast, playing Carleen, Kathryn’s meek sister. She’s spent her life in her sister’s shadow, as a hospice worker and failed equestrian it’s crocheting that gets her through her bad days.
Janicza Bravo (director of Lemon and Atlanta), Arturo Del Puerto (Independence Day: Resurgence, Ride Along 2), Brett Gelman (Mickey’s awful co-worker from LOVE and the conspiracy theorist from Stranger Things), and Bridget Everett (Trainwreck) have also been announced as cast members
