Get ready to think pink because Legally Blonde is returning, this time on the small screen. 23 years after it premiered in cinemas, a TV spin-off based on the successful film franchise, which starred Reese Witherspoon as aspiring lawyer Elle Woods, is currently in the works.

You'll remember that the movie, based on Amanda Brown’s novel of the same name and released in 2001, was a box office success, with Reese hailed for her role as Elle. It led to a sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde in 2003 – which saw Elle, now a Harvard graduate, defending animal rights in Congress – and a Broadway musical. A third film, written by Mindy Kaling, is currently in the works.

But that hasn't stopped TV execs from expanding the Legally Blonde universe even further, with details about the new TV show coming out slowly. Here is everything we know so far about the series...

What’s the new Legally Blonde TV show about?

As you can expect, no plot details are available yet, with all the juicy info being kept under wraps. All we know is that it will be set within the world of Legally Blonde - and there could be more than one off-shoot. One show is being written by Gossip Girl showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage while there’s also a potential second spin-off series, which is still in 'preliminary, idea' stages. Two Legally Blonde shows… we are being spoiled!

Will Reese Witherspoon be back as Elle?

There’s no word yet whether Reese will reprise her famous role as Elle – but as it’s 23 years on, perhaps we’ll see a new generation of pink-obsessed legal powerhouses. However, Reese could make a guest appearance as she is an executive producer on the TV series, creating it through her production company Hello Sunshine.

Previously, Reese said that starring in the film completely transformed her life. 'I was in England making The Importance Of Being Earnest when Legally Blonde came out in America. When I went home, my life had changed forever,' she said. In celebration of the first film’s 20th anniversary in 2021, she said that playing Elle was 'the role of a lifetime'.

Are any of the original Legally Blonde cast returning to the new TV show?

Casting details have yet to be revealed but we’re hoping that Jennifer Coolidge – who played Elle’s friend Paulette – will return in some form and show off her signature ‘bend and snap’ move. We’d also love to see Luke Wilson, who was Elle’s love interest Emmett, back.

Where can I watch the Legally Blonde series?

It’s being produced by Amazon MGM so expect it to air on Amazon Prime Video.
