Kate Moss and Johnny Depp were undeniably one of the ‘it’ couples of the 90s. Regularly arriving at A-list events in matching leather jackets, they were the perfect balance of stylish and dishevelled that characterised the era’s grunge aesthetic.

The fascination around what really caused the demise of the seemingly compatible couple’s relationship has never died down. And when Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard mentioned Kate Moss while she was on the stand during their ongoing libel defamation trial the world’s ears pricked up: 'Is Kate Moss taking the stand', 'Kate Moss testifying' and 'Kate Moss testimony' quickly began trending on Google - So, here's everything you need to know.

Is Kate Moss taking the stand?

Kate Moss has been called to testify in the Depp vs Heard case as a rebuttal witness for Depp. She's taking to the stand on Wednesday and is expected to be questioned directly about Amber Heard's mention of a rumour about an alleged 'stair incident' between her and Depp in the 1990s, which ended with police intervention.

Moss and Depp dated for three years from 1994 to 1997 and were reportedly introduced by the celebrity journalist George Wayne. Although they were an adored showbiz pairing in the public eye, Depp and Moss allegedly fought often and frequent reports of intense arguments between the two emerged during the time they were together.

What is the Kate Moss and Johnny Depp stairs incident?

In her recent testimony, Amber Heard referred to a rumour that Depp allegedly pushed Moss down a flight of stairs at the Mark Hotel in New York in 1994. The hotel room they were staying in had been trashed and Depp was arrested for criminal mischief – but neither of them ever discussed what happened publicly.

While describing an incident during which she punched Depp in the face to allegedly protect her sister Whitney, Heard explained: ‘She threw herself in the line of fire…She was trying to get Johnny to stop. Her back was to the staircase, and Johnny swings at her. I don’t hesitate and wait—I instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs.’

However, a source recently told the New York Post: 'She was wearing flip flips and she slipped on the last two stairs. Johnny caught her and tended to her.'

Why did Kate Moss and Johnny Depp break up?

The staircase incident, if true, happened years before Depp and Moss eventually split and neither has ever referenced violence as the reason for their breakup. Instead, Depp has blamed stupidity, his work, and youth for their split which Moss said left her crying for ‘years’.

‘I have never got that emotional over a woman before,’ Depp told Hello magazine in 1998. ‘I have been so stupid because we had so much going for our relationship. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for what happened – I was difficult to get on with, I let my work get in the way and I didn’t give her the attention I should have done.

‘The whole thing was crazy because I should never have got so worked up over what people had to say about my work,’ he continued. 'Sure, I should care about my movies but when I get home, I should try to leave that stuff behind. I couldn’t do that, and I was horrific to live with. Trust me, I’m a total moron sometimes.’

Meanwhile, Moss told Vanity Fair in 2012: ‘There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit…I believed what he said. Like if I said, “What do I do?” he’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!'
