Their relationship has weathered 26 years of trials and tribulations since The Simpsons first aired in 1989, but in the coming 27th season Marge and Homer are finally going to separate. In an interview with Variety, the show’s executive producer Al Jean revealed some dramatic upcoming plot points.
It’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy - a chronic neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep, causing uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep, even during activities that demand attention - and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage,' he revealed.
Our favourite cartoon couple separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist - who is voiced by the fantastic Lena Dunham. The show will also feature cameo appearances from the other stars of Girls.
There will also be an episode based on Oscar-nominated movie Boyhood, which will focus on Bart and include flashbacks and fast forwards scenes throughout his life.
Homer is going to vote in the 2016 US presidential election, but Al refused to reveal who he would be voting for.
The Simpsons season 27 will air on Sky1 in the UK sometime in 2016.
