As fans finally unpack the events of that epic final episode, the detectives among us noticed some sneaky hints in the opening credits. It turns out there were little clues about the Happy Valley finale at the start of every episode, hidden in plain sight.

Nearly ten years since it first aired, the show everyone's been talking about has finally drawn to a close. The ending of series three was every bit as exhilarating as we'd hoped, but eagle-eyed fans could have predicted what happened a month ago.

Two of the biggest moments from the finale are actually part of the opening credits and we missed them every time. Six whole times in fact!

Tommy Lee Royce's (James Norton) getaway bike from the court escape in episode four features briefly in the opening titles, as does a glimpse of his death scene.

If you watch closely, you can see Tommy's hand reaching out and picking up a petrol can – a moment that only makes sense once you know that he pours petrol on himself and sets himself alight in the final episode.

And the symbolism didn't end there. Tommy's dramatic fireball moment also perfectly mirrored the show's first ever episode when Catherine confronted a man threatening to do the very same thing.

In another shock twist, Ryan (Rhys Connah) decided not to join Tommy in his plans to escape to Spain. The actor told Radio Times: "It's a big decision. It's a vital choice because Catherine's always been worried about Ryan turning into his dad. And for Ryan, making a choice to go with Tommy would essentially be choosing to turn into his dad. But the fact that he chose Catherine is what makes his character come full circle."

Of all the fan theories circulating about the 70-minute finale, none thought to pay close attention to the opening. But the fates of Detective Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and TV's most evil villain Tommy played out exactly as they should – in front of seven and a half million viewers. Now it's time to watch the whole show again from the beginning.
