After three immaculate seasons, Happy Valley has come to an end. (And if you haven't watched the final episode, come back once you have).

Despite the myriad fan theories as to how things would end for Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), only a few guessed correctly.

After escaping the clutches of Darius Knezevic's brother Zeljko and his cronies - who were clearly planning to do him in - a badly injured Tommy made his way to Catherine's house and broke in through the basement window.

This led to a kitchen table showdown that saw Catherine and Tommy go face-to-face for the final time. In the end, Tommy (in a chilling echo of season one) doused himself in petrol and set himself alight. Catherine then tries to put out the flames with a blanket.

Afterwards, Clare finds Catherine in the street, reeling from the confrontation. 'We've had another bit of a tussle,' she tells her. 'I won. Obviously.' And then: 'I think I might have singed one of your crochet blankets' (maybe the best line of the finale).

For a moment, we wondered if Tommy really had met his end, when it was mentioned that he was in a coma. But in the final moments of the show, Catherine receives a text confirming that 'TLR' is dead.

It was closure for Catherine - and us viewers.

But not every plot line was tied up on screen. Which has left us with some questions...

What will happen to Rob Hepworth?

Towards the end of the finale it's revealed that teacher Rob - who was being held under suspicion of murdering his wife Joanna - has been charged after police found inappropriate images on his phone, and discovered he'd been blackmailing a pupil at school to send them. (Which makes us think: when he had that chat with Ryan, was that the start of a plan to groom him?)

Presumably, this will lead to a custodial sentence for Rob, as Catherine asks DS Shepherd what will happen to Rob's two young daughters. Poignantly, he replies 'there's a grandmother'. Just like Ryan - who lost a mother and whose father was incarcerated - these children will now have to be raised by a grandparent.

Why would Poppy never take her coat off?

Fans have speculated throughout the series as to why young Poppy would always have her coat on, even inside the house. Many believed it was to do with the domestic abuse Rob committed at home. Although we only saw him harm Joanna, it's possible he hurt his children, too.

The finale didn't directly address the coat but actor Millie Winnard who plays Joanna explained to Metro:

‘It’s actually a trauma thing, so it’s a [protective] layer. [The coat] is definitely to protect [herself] because of what she’s living in, the environment that she’s living in. She doesn’t want to take her coat off.’

Has Darius Knezevic been caught?

In his final moments Tommy tells Catherine that Darius Knezevic did indeed kill Gary Gackowski - a crime for which Tommy had taken the fall for, in return for the Knezevics busting him out of prison. ('I'll never forget Gary Gackowski - I nicked him once for a public order offence and he bit me,' Catherine says deadpan.)

Later, congratulating Catherine, DS Shepherd remarks, 'Royce and Darius Knezevic all in one day'. So presumably they've either already tracked down Darius, or they now how the evidence to nail him for Gary's murder. However, kingpin Darius has proved time and time again how difficult he is to take down - is DS Shepherd right to sound so confident?

Will Faisal go down for Joanna's murder?

Thanks to Catherine's detective work - and a little help from Alison - she figured out the connection between pharmacist Faisal, the prescription drugs and poor Joanna. Catherine tells DS Shepherd what she's uncovered as she's packing up her belongings on her last day. He seems to get the significance of her discovery, so surely will now bring Faisal in for questioning.

Earlier we see Faisal panicking as he learns the two younger gang members he was involved with have been arrested: we're guessing they will tell police about what Faisal's been up to, adding to the evidence against him. We're left to assume Faisal will get his comeuppance, but is there a chance he might still evade justice, or go on the run?

Did Tommy actually have remorse for what he did to Becky?

When Tommy breaks into Catherine's home he finds two photo albums, one of Ryan, then one of Becky. Breaking down as he leafs through the photos of Becky, it's hard to tell if his tears are genuine, or the self-serving tears of a narcissist abuser.

In the final confrontation with Catherine he says: 'I'm sorry I didn't treat Becky better', claiming he 'loved' her. Catherine spits back: 'You crippled her, you reduced her to nothing with your endless, endless abuse and your nasty little threats...this bright, beautiful kid, reduced to nothing because of a non-entity like you.'

Tommy replies: 'I loved her. She made me feel normal. And then she didn't want to know me - and that's when I got cross. And that were you... If I did anything to her it were because of you, you sanctimonious bitch'.

So clearly Tommy doesn't take any responsibility for what he did. And his 'regret' was losing a person who made him feel better about himself.

Is Catherine on her way to the Himalayas?

In the closing scene, we see Catherine driving her fixed up Jeep, laden with belongings strapped on top of the vehicle, as she goes to visit Becky's grave (which is where she gets the text confirming Tommy is dead).

After saying goodbye to Becky she puts on her sunglasses and walks back to the Jeep - to what we hope is the start of her Himalayan adventure. It would have been gratifying to maybe get a glimpse of her out there, having the retirement she dreamed of, but that's far too much of a neat and happy ending for a show like Happy Valley.

Will Ryan become a police officer?

A small detail you might have missed - at the start of the episode when Catherine takes Ryan to the police station to make a statement to the manhunt team looking for Tommy, DS Shepherd mistakes Ryan for a new recruit, saying 'they get younger every day' adding 'thought you were a new recruit - something about you' - a comment that leaves Ryan smiling.

Will Ryan follow in Catherine's footsteps and join the force in the future? And could that mean we get a Happy Valley spin-off one day following Ryan's work in the police? We can only hope!
