This week music has been taken over by festival announcements and tweets from Texas’ SXSW Festival where attendees are concerned with free burritos, frozen margaritas and brand new bands. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on in the (actually quite warm) UK. Here are some of the parties going on this weekend.
**
@ The Brickworks, Nottingham**
Saturday March 15th
Route 94, T Williams, Waze & Odyssey & More @ East Village Art Club, Liverpool
Saturday March 15th
One person who has good reason to stay over here is Rinse signing Route 94 - who made it to number one in the UK charts last week with My Love featuring Jess Glynne. While he’s been at it since 2010, 2014 has been a big year for Rowan so far (he’s also got a track also on the Number 1 Katy B album) so expect this weekend to feel like a celebration as he supports Jack author Breach at intimate warehouse The Brickworks in Nottingham, before heading to Liverpool where one of the city’s most reliable nights Chibuku Shake Shake parties for its birthday with sets from him, Wilkinson, Andy C and PMR’s T Williams.
Andy Blake, Bell Towers @ Bussey Building, London
Friday March 14th
The Return Of Andy Blake @ Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh
Saturday March 15th* *
If you feel like an escape, but without going that far, Andy Blake could be your man. Best known for hosting World Unknown, a forget-everything- leave-your-phone -and-inhibitions-at- home mailing-list only London party, this weekend he’s at the Bussey Building on Friday (see also: Jon Rust upstairs) for the popular Wavey Tones night. They nail it when they say Andy “possesses strange and mystical powers on the decks and one of the broadest and most comprehensive record collections known to man”. The night after he returns to Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh. ***
Horsemeat Disco w Lindstrom @ XOYO
Friday March 14th ***
***XOYO Loves w Duke Dumont @ The Coronet, London
Saturday March 15th***
Nothing says sun out = more fun going out than a set from long-time festival favourites and club-hopping joy filled DJ collective Horsemeat Disco. Their parties have been going for almost 10 years and don’t expect any slacking as they fill out XOYO on Friday night alongside Norwegian cosmic disco-favourite Lindstrom. Expect deep disco, italo and plenty of house. Talking of XOYO, the East London venue gets to stretch its legs the following night with a set from Duke Dumont (another man having a good run of it with last year’s Need U (100%) nominated for a Grammy, a new single out Monday) at The Coronet near Elephant & Castle roundabout.
*****Arcadia Series @ Ace Hotel followed by Throwing Shade, Mischa Mafia @ Ace Hotel
Friday March 14th*****
Or, lastly, if you want a night to feel like a holiday without dropping thousands - try the new Ace Hotel in Shoreditch. Drink coffee early on, linger in the lounge as if you’re staying there AND there’s a screening of ‘Melancholia’ (a set of short films shot in Super-8 at the World’s Fairgrounds in Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY) as part of composer and video artist William Basinki’s ‘Arcadia’ series. Later, DJ and producer Throwing Shade hosts a free party in the basement between 10pm and 3am. Guests slots come from Mischa Mafia (PDA), James Massiah (Work It) and Jeremiah Valentino (otherwise known as the brilliant Darq E Freaker).
