What’s this then? Lucy, the new sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson.

Oooh Scar Jo loves a sci-fi at the moment. Did you see Under The Skin? Yeah, it was weird but good. This film is much easier to follow; although you may end up feeling a little stupid. You see Scarlett’s character has unlocked her brain's full potential and, as a result, can do stuff like learn a language in a few seconds. Maybe not one to watch if you’ve just got disappointing A-Level results. It's a bit like Limitless, although writer and director Luc Besson said it took him 9 years to finish the script, so this is no rip-off.

So Scar-Jo is Lucy? She’s Lucy.

What’s Lucy’s story? She’s a party girl living in Taiwan with a dodgy boyfriend who forces her to take a briefcase into a hotel and drop it off for a mystery bloke called Mr Jang. Turns out the suitcase is full of this new drug that expands your brain to it's full capacity over time from the 10% we normal humans use (this is absolutely not true by the way. If we only used 10% we'd be dead). An evil doctor implants a bag of the drugs into Lucy’s stomach and she’s forced to traffic them overseas. En route she gets beaten up by one of Mr Jang’s guys who bursts the bag causing the drugs to leak into her blood stream.

**Wow! What happens? **Well, at first she uses her powers to track down a scientist played by Morgan Freeman, (King of the Over 70’s Silver Fox Club) who specialises in neurology. She wants to help fill the gaps in his research but Mr Jang and his crew of hit men are tracking her down and basically leaving a blood bath in their wake.

What’re people saying about it? Robbie Collin from the* Telegraph* called it ‘The blockbuster of the summer’ and Jordan Hoffman at the* Guardian* said ‘Even with only 10% of my brain I can see that while this movie isn't what I'd typically call good, it is, undeniably, enjoyable mindlessness’.

And what are we saying? It’s always nice to see an action film that isn’t choc-a-bloc full of cheese and cringeworthy one-liners. We're big on the fact that this is a sci-fi with a strong female lead although there is a somewhat irrelevant kiss scene between Lucy and a policeman, which didn’t really make sense considering at that point in the film Lucy was meant to have lost the ability to be affected by human emotions. Nevertheless though, it's edge of your seat stuff and even if all the science behind it is all hocus pocus, it's still an interesting concept. All in all a good one for an adrenaline rush and mates, boyfriends, girlfriends and parents will all be happy to watch with you.
