And Just Like That and Miranda back - there's still a piece missing, in the form of fabulous PR executive Samantha. It's been much joked that Samantha is the 'sex' in the Sex And The City (probably why the show has been named as And Just Like That) and her absence from the show is explained very early in the reboot for questioning fans. Within the first minute, it's revealed she's moved to London for a new job, as Miranda tells OTT Bitsy (who, in a throwback to the former series, the gang randomly bump into).
It's not until a few minutes later that Carrie and Miranda look anguished as they discuss why the group have fallen out. Even though, yes, the writers were quite clearly making not-so-subtle digs to Kim Cattrall not returning to the franchise - if we stay in the fictional land of SATC, Carrie and Miranda looked genuinely upset as they explained that they hadn't heard from Samantha since she moved to England.
When the subject, which writers awkwardly shoehorn in a few minutes later, arises again Miranda sadly tells Carrie 'it's like [Samantha]'s dead'. The reason they've all fallen out? Carrie thinks it's because she fired Samantha as a publicist - which she says then led to her being 'fired as a friend'. Carrie then looks hurt, as she says she expected Samantha to see her as 'more than an ATM' - and explains how she left the exec numerous messages to try and resolve the issue. It's obviously not a straight-forward falling out - and as can often happen in real life, sometimes friendship falls out can involve money, as well as emotions.
As all of the main characters are still happy with their husbands (Charlotte and Harry, Miranda and Steve, Carrie and Big - even Stanford and Anthony), this is one of the most relatable moments of the first episode. Nobody likes a friendship break-up. And sometimes, falling out with friends can be more long-lasting, and more hurtful, than the collapse of a relationship. Especially someone who you have been close with for years, someone, as Carrie says, that you thought you'd be 'friends with forever'. But sadly, just like relationships, friendships don't always work out. Even though you presume, unlike potential partners who might ghost you on a dating app, your mates are going to be there forever. The sad truth is that friends can ghost, too - and you can still be waiting for them to call.
